Pleasure to participate in BVCA's training course with Tom Eskell for the second year. This year at the famous Cheesegrater. Having shared our thoughts on what a truly value-add commercial DD looks like for almost 100 minutes, I've also picked up a few takeaways from investors' perspectives. 💡 Credentials go much further than sales pitch. Expertise can easily translate to quality and insights you get in such a short DD timeline, hence the knowledge and experience you can leverage make a huge difference, e.g. a well-defined and structured market model provides a meaningful context to headroom for growth, implied share and eventually feeds into forecast assessment in the right perspective. 💡 Open and honest prevent poor processes that still happen more than expected. Bringing all parties as early as possible to exchange thoughts, perspectives and sensible approaches would almost always stop the unnecessary inefficiency and disappointment. Almost always. 💡 Investors value the integration of different DD streams. In many cases, commercial DD works really well with financial, operational, tech, and even political DD where relevant. The combined insights are simply more powerful when done right - i.e. collaborative and open-minded between advisers, investors and Management. 💡 Practicality is one area that all DD advisers could do better to guide investors. Investors value the practical so-what's and next steps more than ever in the current climate. We're best placed and expected to support or challenge the investment thesis, rather than a tick-box exercise. Sessions like this have always been a two-way learning.
