Are you familiar with RED-S or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport? It refers to insufficient calorie intake and/or excessive energy expenditure. How does RED-S manifest? When the body lacks the energy, not only can physical/sport performance suffer, other physiological processes take a hit too – specifically the endocrine, menstrual, skeletal and immune systems. Women may experience menstrual dysfunction, low bone mineral density, a weakened immune system, significant weight loss and become more injury prone. RED-S is prevalent in the female athletic community where young, aspiring athletes face issues with their menstrual cycles, eating habits and body image. Amongst almost 800 UK female athletes surveyed, 52% had experienced at least 2 symptoms and 37% had experience 3 or more. 91% of female athletes have worried about the number of calories they are eating and 36% have KNOWINGLY IGNORED missed periods in the belief that it is normal for an active person. What is your origin story? Originally, I wanted to help people who were injured, overwhelmed, and confused about how to properly rehab and become physically fit simultaneously. So I got my doctorate in human physiology, rehabilitation, and performance (PT) Then, I met the real world. Where organizations didn’t live up to my standards. Practitioners didn’t share the same passion. Many wouldn’t go the extra step, and even more lie about their credentials. I learned the importance of working with people who wanted to get better, improve, and best of all set an example for the young, clueless athlete I once was. I’ve had some set-backs. Went from trying to build something great……….to training people out of a dusty garage. I’m more focused now than ever. My eyes clear. A vision born. My family has beat average metrics in this area since the colonial period and perhaps earlier. My grandma turned 90. My grandpa will be 89 this year. 🤔 They have relatives who are in their 90s and 100s. Our ancestors frequently lived through their 80s, having been born in the 1700s and 1800s. Brain heath matters!
