Effective school principals play a crucial role in shaping a positive school environment. Impactful leaders in schools contribute to the enhancement of the school climate, increased teacher satisfaction and retention, and positive outcomes for students. To make a lasting impact on a diverse student body, school leaders must commit to addressing structural barriers to success through an equity-based approach. Educational inequities persist across schools, with students of color encountering challenges such as higher suspension rates, racial discrimination, and systemic barriers hindering their success. Principals are pivotal in addressing these issues within schools, working towards eliminating the perpetuation of such inequities. Join The Hunt Institute and Wallace's Rotunda Floyd-Cooper as we engage in a conversation about the significance of equity-centered school leadership and how its implementation can transform our schools into better environments for all students. Director of Education at Barr Foundation | School Design, Nonprofit Management, Education Policy, Program Development, Philanthropy
In this issue of the (Ed)ition, we’re featuring 3 interconnected & mutually reinforcing themes that research & experience tell us are key to centering student learning and wellbeing in tumultuous times. We hope you find the inspirations & resources useful as you navigate this season. ✔️Responsive learning experiences. High schools have the opportunity to focus on the main thing (meaningful, quality instruction) while simultaneously capitalizing on the distractions (addressing issues that deeply affect students’ lives). ✔️Welcoming schools. Young people need spaces amidst the chaos that promote physical and psychological safety and feelings of belonging. ✔️Steady leadership. Leaders in education nonprofits, school systems, and schools all play an important role to navigate the context and provide the vision and cover to stay focused on student experiences. https://lnkd.in/eM3sWapv

Local school boards have more authority and ability than most people realize. Veronica Gemma, Education Director at PA Economic Growth PAC, believes school board members need to realize their power because every school board is their own governing body. They set their own policy for their district. For example, the PDE—the Pennsylvania Department of Education—put out benchmarks for academics per grade level. And the school district could use whatever materials or curriculum they choose to reach those benchmarks. In most cases, local school boards have significant authority to give leadership and guidance to critical areas in their school systems. Including the type of curriculum that’s going to be followed and many of the policies that are implemented and carried out. That’s why we believe that local school boards and having good leaders are important. But until people realize the advantages and limitations they have in their school policies, nothing will change. This is why clarity and knowledge of school boards is a necessary part of change in schools. 🙌 What is a school board policy you want to know more about?

We know how important leadership is. It’s not just the research that tells us this. It’s the stories and experiences. A good leader can make a school feel palpable with energy. They celebrate. They challenge. They inspire. They change communities. We have the awesome power to transform generations. (Insert body chills) But it starts with leadership. It starts with someone who says “I’ll answer the call” or “I’ll stand in the gap.” Such a move is a brave and courageous act. And we desperately need courage right now. If you haven’t heard, Tulsa Public Schools is teaming up with New Leaders and Clark Atlanta University to offer the National Aspiring Leaders Fellowship. This program has a track record of success in developing urban principals - who know what it looks like to answer that call. The mission is to ensure that we have leadership that represent our student population. We need people to step up. So we are eliminating all financial barriers. The program is paid for for the right ten candidates. We just need to find them! So spread the word. Applications close May 15! https://lnkd.in/gTYRDx8i #LeadershipDevelopment #EducationLeadership #TulsaPublic
