🤔 I have always been a bit torn about the International Women’s Day. It exists to remind us how unequal we still are. And this year, we don’t have much to celebrate.
🆘 Especially not when it comes to business, finance, leadership, ownership and power. Right now things are unfortunately moving in the wrong direction. Dagens Industri (Sweden's largest daily business newspaper) reports today that the number of female CEOs on Nasdaq Stockholm has decreased(!) since last year (from 12.2% to 11.9%), the share of female Chairs in listed companies are only 8% and as we have known for several years now, only 1% of the capital is invested in companies founded by women.
⚠️ This noticeably empty page in today’s Dagens Industri reads ”on this page we were supposed to report on the progress made when it comes to diversity in the leadership of our listed companies” - and on the right corner it says “unfortunately there is nothing to report”.
💡 We seriously need to step this up, fast. And we can! By remembering that the most important job is not done on March 8th, but on all the other 364 days of the year. And by remembering that every man and woman can (and need to) help to make the future better and more equal for the next generation.
🔺 By trying to allocate capital and investments more equal
🔺 By ensuring that nomination committees are diversified, and from them on also boards, CEOs and management teams
🔺 By using purchasing power to influence companies to be more diverse on all levels
🔺 By ensuring we do not only attract, but also retain, diverse talent - especially when they are a minority in the team
🔺 And last but not least, by leading with example
🎯 As with almost everything in business; what gets measured gets done - and companies and employees tend to prioritize what the board and CEO deem important 😘
I hope we can look forward to seeing much more progress in this area ahead of next year!
🥂 Here’s to all men and women that are leading the way to a more equal future!
🥂 And congratulations to the brilliant and innovative Helena Hedblom, CEO of Epiroc, who made the top of this year’s list of the most powerful women in business. Role models are hugely important, and you are one of the more impressive ones out there 🙌🏻🤩
