Thrilled to share my recent publication in The Medical Journal's Fall/Winter 2023 edition, focusing on an issue close to my heart - spinal compression and disease in military working dogs. While our paper centered on these incredible canines serving in the military, the insights gleaned hold significant implications for all our four-legged friends. Our case delves into the intricacies of a specific spinal compression and disease affecting these dogs, uncovering optimistic findings regarding the prognosis of this condition. The key takeaway from our case report is the potential for a better prognosis for this anatomical condition than what was previously understood. This revelation underscores the critical importance of early diagnosis through the use of advanced imaging techniques. Equally vital is the implementation of a specific treatment plan tailored to the needs of each affected dog. Our findings suggest that with timely and appropriate intervention, the outcomes for dogs suffering from spinal compression and related diseases can be dramatically improved. I extend my gratitude to my co-authors, the treatment team, and all the dedicated military working dogs and their handlers who made this study possible. Your resilience and commitment inspire us all. For those interested in learning more about our findings and how they can be applied to improve canine health, I encourage you to read the full article in The Medical Journal's latest edition. #VeterinaryMedicine #CanineHealth #MilitaryWorkingDogs #SpinalDiseases #EarlyDiagnosis #AdvancedImaging #ResearchPublication

Success story for dogs with rare disease! A recent study details the successful surgical treatment of a dog with a rare, bilateral chronic disruption of the triceps brachii tendon. The researchers used a suture-mediated anatomic footprint repair technique to reconstruct the tendon attachments, restoring function and range of motion. This innovative approach could help improve outcomes for similar injuries in canine patients! Today, statistics on pet health are the worst they've ever been. Dogs are living seven years shorter than they did just 20 years ago, and cancer rates in dogs have soared to an alarming 1:1.65 (nearly 100%). Cats, too, are suffering, with cancer rates estimated at 1:3—though I believe this is highly underreported. Clearly what we are doing in modern medicine and lifestyle is NOT WORKING! Cranial Closing Wedge Osteotomy (CCWO) has become a popular technique for the treatment of canine cranial cruciate ligament disease in dogs that have a steep tibial plateau or joint angle, such as West Highland Terriers. It can also be a preferred method of treatment in smaller dogs where techniques like TTA may be difficult. In the morning session we cover the key objectives before practicing the technique on saw bone and then in the wet lab for a hands-on practical.
