West Bengal tops the list with 25 sitting MPs and MLAs facing charges related to crimes against women, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 21 and Odisha with 17, according to the report that comes amid the nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a state-run hospital in Kolkata and sexual assault of two children in Thane. Why Common Man has No Trust in #CriminalJustice system of this Country & I question Lordships: Without taking names, there’s a person who’s eating homemade Tiffin (like-Poori, Aloo subzi, Halwa, Aam etc) on Health Grounds. Now look at our modern lifestyle. If we get a full body check up done, I’m sure most of us would’ve some or the other health complication. So everyone should get Ceaser Salad, Pasta etc in Jail. And you know what’s the diet budget in Jail? Take for eg. Odisha: 80Rs/day. And even within that 80Rs who doesn’t know how Jail food is Compromised. And yes, my Lordships are so called champions of Human Rights. They’ve atleast 200ltrs fuel per month whereas Residences are close mostly. How many surprise visits are happening, considering almost 77% inmates are Undertrials, guilt not yet proven. I challenge: If my Lordships can eat 4 Rotis n Dal from Jail Kitchen on surprise visit, I will bow down to anything. 🙏🏻

The Power of a Zero FIR During my posting in Central Delhi, on August 21, 2013, I was overseeing security arrangement at Rajghat concerning the visit of a foreign Head of State. After the dignitary departed, the SHO approached me with a troubling complaint—a minor girl had been molested by a seer. The the girl's account of seer's inappropriate touching and kissing to his understanding was non-cognizable. I directed him to apply POCSO Act that appropriately covered the incident reported as 'sexual assault'. Another challenge in the episode was its occurrence in Jodhpur, outside our jurisdiction. Taking shelter under Section 156(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which empowers any officer to register an FIR regardless of jurisdictional limits, an FIR was immediately registered as a 'Zero FIR' under IPC sections 342, 376, 506, and sections of the POCSO Act. The seer is now serving a life sentence in Central Jail Jodhpur. For those unfamiliar, a Zero FIR is assigned a 'zero' registration number and can be filed at any police station for swift action, especially for serious crimes involving women and children. The case is then transferred to the appropriate jurisdiction for investigation. It’s alarming to see the rising number of sexual violence cases in India, with recent incidents in Kolkata involving a doctor highlighting this grim reality. Despite the sweeping judicial reforms after the Nirbhaya case—such as harsher sentences, the removal of anticipatory bail, and mandated fast-tracked investigations—justice still feels out of reach for many victims. Fast-track courts were introduced to expedite justice, yet West Bengal, the fourth most populous state in the country, has only 6 functional fast-track courts. This is even lesser than states like Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Out of 2,996 pending cases, only 48 have been resolved, placing West Bengal just marginally above states/UTs like Puducherry, Nagaland, and Goa. The father of the youth, Prema Ram lodged a complaint in Jodhpur that Ludhiana police abducted his son Manveer (22) in March this year, brought him to Ludhiana and then showed false recovery of 2 kg opium from him. He was abducted from Rajasthan and the alleged abduction was captured in the CCTV footage procured from toll plazas. The father alleged that when he contacted senior officers in Ludhiana, no one listened to him, while the junior officers demanded a bribe of Rs 15 lakh to release his son. The Ludhiana police also threatened them that if they disclosed this to anyone, the entire family would be implicated in a false drug case. Following a court order, the Rajasthan police filed an FIR and registered a case against 10 police personnel of Ludhiana police. I am sharing a poster I created a few years ago for my client to raise awareness about the importance of self-defense for women in India. This message is especially relevant in light of the recent Kolkata doctor rape and murder, as well as the Delhi gang rape incident. These cruel crimes highlight how insensitive and sick we, as a society, have become. They expose the inadequacy of our laws in providing justice for victims of rape.
