Wildlife trafficking remains a pervasive threat to rhinos, and increasingly to other species such as elephants and lions which bring tourists and jobs to our important protected areas. These crimes also affect people living around our parks by exposing them to criminals connected to international trafficking syndicates. What is WWF doing? ·      WWF has been involved in species conservation and addressing the threats to wildlife since the 1960s. ·      Our influence in wildlife conservation policies assists in balancing environmental goals against social, political and economic needs. ·      WWF works to curb poaching by implementing innovative technology and building the capacity of government and community rangers on the ground. We also tackle illegal trade of—and demand for—rhino horn through advocacy and strengthening of local and international law enforcement to bring trafficking perpetrators to justice. ·      Through our Black Rhino Range Expansion Programme (BRREP) we establish new rhino populations and move rhinos from risk areas to safe havens. Australian native animals are critical to our ecosystems. With fewer than 60 Javan rhinos and less than 50 Sumatran rhinos remaining in the wild, their populations are on the brink of extinction. Just some of the 72 This image shows wildlife rescuer and carer Emma from Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter weighing just some of her 72 rescued Grey-headed Flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) pups in care. At one stage Emma had 109 to look after! Wrapped in ‘mumma rolls’ to keep warm and secure before being weighed, the majority of these pups were found alone in colonies. Why? Maybe their mums didn't make it home due to being caught in barbed wire, illegal fruit-tree netting or were electrocuted. There was also a starvation event this year. By helping disperse pollen and seeds up the east coast of Australia, Grey-headed Flying-foxes are keystone species (which is an animal that helps define an entire ecosystem, and without them, ecosystems would be dramatically different or even cease to exist altogether) and so are vital for the health and regeneration of many of our forests.
