Lack of diversity in academia. Academia often feels like an ivory tower, removed from the realities of oppression. But a diverse professorial pipeline is critical to changing that. Without role models and advocates in these halls of power, marginalised students continue to feel isolated. Staggeringly, less than 1% of senior academics at UK universities are black. We've partnered with The University of Manchester to help change this through their Diversity Scholars PhD programme. By providing a support system through the doctoral process, we aim to diversify academia and challenge the current status quo. Dismantling systemic inequality requires institutions to fundamentally change. Our mentees will soon be the trailblazing professors and thought leaders driving this change. With more black academics in the ivory tower, its gates can finally open wider. This creates ripple effects across societies. How do research processes center the stories, ideas, and viewpoints of Black Canadian girls? How do scholars partner with Black girls to establish the research process as homeplace? Scant literature positions Black Canadian girls, especially those receiving special education support, as producers in research aimed at reimagining schools as liberatory spaces. My lastest arts-informed autoethnography draws on literature and personal stories to investigate how I partnered with three Black Canadian girls to reconceptualize their role in research processes. Introducing a Landmark Collaboration: Unveiling Black British History Through Digital Timelines Black Cultural Archives and Royal Holloway, University of London proudly announce the launch of a groundbreaking series of digital timelines, a pivotal outcome of our 5-year partnership which was unveiled in 2023. This innovative venture aims to democratise the teaching and learning of inclusive, shared histories for all. At the heart of this collaborative effort lies a commitment to fostering a more inclusive understanding of British history, particularly in educational settings. Through a blend of expertise from Royal Holloway and the rich cultural repository of BCA, we embark on a journey to reshape narratives and amplify marginalised voices. Inaugurating this initiative is the first phase of our suite of digital timelines: "Enslavement, Resistance, and Abolition." Recognising the inadequacy of traditional narratives that often overlook the voices of the enslaved, this segment offers a comprehensive chronicle from the inception of British slave trading voyages to the monumental milestones of abolition and emancipation. Join us on this journey of fostering a more inclusive educational landscape for generations to come. The Complicity of the Black Bourgeoisie: A Reflection on Morehouse College’s Controversial Decision Morehouse College’s invitation to President Biden to deliver the commencement speech for the class of 2024 has ignited a storm of criticism and highlighted a deeper issue within segments of the African American leadership. As an institution that boasts the graduation of civil rights legends like Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Morehouse’s decision seems paradoxical in the current sociopolitical climate. The criticism stems from President Biden’s foreign policy stances, especially his administration’s unwavering support for Israel amidst its contentious military actions in Gaza, which reportedly have resulted in significant Palestinian casualties. This stance by Biden contrasts sharply with the ongoing protests across various campuses against the injustices faced by Palestinians, raising questions about the sensitivity and alignment of Morehouse’s leadership with its historically justice-oriented mission. It’s disheartening to see a historic institution, which should stand as a beacon of justice and progressive thought, align itself with a figure who is currently seen by many as representing policies that contradict the principles of equity and human rights. The invitation is indicative of a broader issue where the black bourgeoisie appears increasingly integrated into a system that has historically oppressed not just their own community but other marginalized groups worldwide. Their complacency and pursuit of alignment with power structures starkly contradict the radical and transformative ethos that leaders like King advocated. The leadership within the Black community, especially in places of influence like Morehouse, must reassess their roles and the message they send to their students and community. It’s a call for an urgent and thorough overhaul to reconnect with the roots of civil rights and social justice that once defined their path. The acceptance and normalization of policies that conflict with these principles under the guise of political engagement or strategic alliances only serve to dilute the powerful legacy of advocacy and change that institutions like Morehouse are built upon. This is not just about a commencement speech; it’s about the direction and soul of a community’s leadership. Morehouse, and similar institutions, need to recalibrate their moral compasses, ensuring they truly embody the values they profess to uphold. The future demands leadership that is not only in touch with the realities of global injustices but also bravely stands against them.
