Alyque Padamsee, known as the Father of Indian Advertising, balanced two distinct worlds - advertising and theatre. As CEO of Lintas (now MullenLowe Lintas Group), Padamsee shaped the agency’s growth while directing over fifty full-length plays for one of India’s most active theatre groups. For him, theatre developed his imagination while advertising honed his analytical powers. His double life was marked by some of India’s most iconic ad campaigns, including the Liril girl, Surf Excel’s Lalitaji, Hamara Bajaj, and Kamasutra Condoms, alongside theatre productions like Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Death of a Salesman. His ability to juggle these careers came from an understanding of time management, a skill he honed after an experience in college. His time management, creativity, and strategic planning not only shaped the culture at Lintas but also influenced the broader advertising industry. More importantly, he mentored many of today’s leaders and his legacy lives on through the people he inspired and the values he instilled. I got an opportunity to speak to his peers about their experience working with the legend and the lessons today’s professionals can emulate from his life. Did you know that VGC launched BBC in the Indian market? In a cluttered market, it was quite a challenge to position it in a differentiated manner. We drew from it’s intrinsic values of an International channel with access to news of the world and combined it with their ability to be able to connect the dots in a way that made international news relevant to India. “What Affects The World, Affects You” was the theme for our TVC campaign. It used a series of impactful films to show how an event in one part of the world would affect another region entirely, effectively positioning BBC as the premier source for capturing such interconnected moments and providing depth to news coverage.
