Part 2: As we enter the final days of 2024 I've been reflecting on the year and I realized that last week was the perfect microcosm of it. Three events collided to create a whirlwind of activity, purpose, and gratitude. I want to give each the attention it deserves so let's move on to the second: The Oklahoman Top Workplaces Awards. Last Wednesday afternoon a group of us took a short break from the Phase 2 Winter Summit to attend the 2024 Oklahoman's Top Workplaces Awards here in OKC. We weren't sure what to expect, but after coming in 3rd last year our hopes were high. Well we cleaned up and were able to return to our team dinner with the following in hand: 📢 The Communication Award which acknowledges that our team members feel well-informed about the company's performance, decisions, operations, direction, and goals. 👨👩👧👦 The Family Forward Award, an inaugural award presented by the Potts Family Foundation that recognizes Phase 2 for our commitment to supporting employees who are parents, caregivers, or guardians of children or adults. 🏆 1st place in the small business category! These awards are 100% driven by anonymous employee feedback which is analyzed and ranked by a neutral 3rd party, Energage. That makes these awards insanely special and tells us that we are doing a lot of things right. But it's not in our nature to rest on our laurels. All we are focused on now is to scour our feedback for opportunities to improve. All of us work so hard to make Phase 2 a great place to work, and a great company to work with, so these types of awards and events are so meaningful and invigorating as we close this year and enter a new one. I'm more grateful than ever to be a part of this company and am excited to play whatever role I can in keeping this an amazing place to work. Cheng Chuan Khaw, our Head of Platform for MVNE(O), Pre-paid and Maxx, goes above and beyond to organise unforgettable experiences for his team. Think bigger than birthday celebrations and post-work dinners: we’re talking De-Stress Yacht Parties, Desaru Weekends, and Bintan Sleepovers. These are not just work events – they are opportunities for the team to bond, unwind, and recharge. “For me, organising and participating in these gatherings has been a way to bring more positivity into our work environment,” said Khaw. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the team laughing, connecting, and just being themselves outside of work.” A trip to Kukup especially stands out for Khaw. The festive season can feel bittersweet when a team member hands in their notice just before Christmas. Rather than dwelling on the loss, focus on handling it with grace. Today marks one year of sobriety, my soberversary. I absolutely love Christmas, to the point I start wearing Christmas jumpers on the 5th November (I've got to wait until after my mums birthday, of course). I love a festive mulled wine and Christmas morning bucks fizz. Last year, early in my sobriety, I bought AF prosecco and orange juice for my Christmas morning bucks fizz, and AF mulled wine that I heated with orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Super yum, super festive. Sobriety wasn't necessarily easy to start with. I felt a lot of pressure to drink and judgement for not. Whether that was real or imagined is irrelevant, it's how I felt. Now, though, I wouldn't change a thing. I love sobriety. I still "drink", I just choose AF options. I'm still social (when I want to be). The main differences now? I'm never hungover or suffering hangxiety. My blood pressure and BMI are both healthy. My bank balance... well, that's about the same, I don't deprive myself. The improvements to my physical and mental health are phenomenal, and I don't miss alcohol at all. I've slowly let friends, family, and colleagues know about my sobriety, and on the whole, they've either been supportive in their own ways, curious but polite, or frankly not cared. So for my team Christmas meal next week, I know my colleagues won't bat an eye at my AF choices. They won't question it, comment on it, make judgements, or peer pressure me. They might start friendly conversation about it, but I know they respect me and my choices and I feel comfortable sharing it with them. I urge everyone to be a safe space for sober or sober curious friends, family, and colleagues (both during festive periods and year round). You don't need to know their reasons (and truthfully, they don't need one), you just need to be respectful and kind.
