I was saddened to hear about the financial state of British arts festivals and worry the threat of some being ‘lost’ could impact Scotland negatively. A report by the British Arts Festivals Association entitled The Festivals Forward report found that last year, on average, there was a £20,000 funding gap across UK festivals. For an industry already dependant on grants, it’s a worrying trend, not least for Scottish institutions like the Edinburgh Fringe. Research and findings are all well and good, but only if they inspire action and allow for growth in our arts sector once again. Protecting our culture and inspiring future generations of creatives must always be high on our agenda as a nation.

Amateur choir directors are fascinating. They are able to make 30 people with very little technical knowledge (music theory) create products (songs) admired by customers willing to pay for them (audience). Today, after months of practice for a concert, our patron requested us to sing one song that we had never worked before. We had literally 5 minutes to prepare before singing. It was a canon, not the easiest thing to do (not for me anyway). People were thrilled with our performance. How on earth that happened? 1.- Will. We all wanted to make it happen 2.- Communication. Our conductor provided really specific and applicable instructions about how to make it happen 3.- Shared leadership. The ones who got it first jumped in showing the way to others My take away: will, clear direction, and shared leadership, multiplies speed to market, even with the basics :-)

Ever noticed how running a railroad is like conducting an orchestra? 🎻 Every train is an instrument 🎼 Each schedule a musical note 🎭 Every station a movement in the symphony 🎪 280,000 daily passengers are our audience The art of leadership is about more than just keeping time. It's about creating harmony. After 18 years of conducting this symphony, I've learned that the best performances happen when every player knows they matter. How do you create harmony in your workplace? Share your thoughts below! #RailLeadership #TeamHarmony #LeadershipPhilosophy #ThinkDifferent #TheSymphonyofTransportation

I would like share with you what I call a celebration of humanity, one of my favorites for its tremendous abundance of love and care. With every movement, every expression, every musical note, and every voice, the celebration speaks for itself. We are united by humanity. At the boundaries of music, all destructive feelings of hatred cease, replaced by love. Another important element in this piece is the spirit of teamwork. Each person plays a vital role, even if not in the spotlight. They are significant and contribute to a complex process that produces a beautiful performance. Imagine one person playing incorrectly or singing off-key; it would affect the entire team. Team spirit is crucial and should be a priority if you want your work to be complete It's important for everyone to understand and learn the meaning of being present in this life, to sow goodness and thwart any plans that hinder human progress with love. To be a responsible person who instills a spirit of teamwork in their family, work, community, and surroundings Enjoy Yanni introducing " Niki Nana " ! https://lnkd.in/dubq2vKK

Good speakers deliver a performance. Great speakers create an experience. For me there are few things that beat the experience of a rugby day in Edinburgh. The whole city comes alive. You meet friends and family in bars and houses to watch the other games on TV, then if you’re lucky it’s off to the stadium itself. The streets are jumping and the air tingles with anticipation. Murrayfield stadium can hold over 1% of Scotland’s total population, and when the national anthem comes on it feels like the whole country is belting it out. The part that always gets me, even when watching on TV but especially in the stadium itself, is when the bagpipes go off and the last verse is sung acapella. It gives me goosebumps every time. There’s a handful of speeches that have done the same thing for me. The acapella part shows the power our voice has to stir the emotions and strike something deep within. There’s no music, no pyrotechnics, but still it awakes something within. This is what I believe we need to be striving for as speakers. Not just to have our audience nodding along or scribbling notes they will forgot about the following Monday. Experiences last, and they are the legacy we leave as speakers. #publicspeaking #speeches #publicspeakingskills
