Every year the Australia debate raises it's head and every year the frustration builds. My 2 cents .... If we look at the needs of the two sides of the debate it is obvious to me that one single day is not able to meet those needs. One day needs to provide the country with a day of reflection for the loss and sorrow. The other needs to provide the country with a day where we can come to celebrate the multicultural country we are and the progress we all aim to achieve each year. It's not a complex solution. We know how to do both. Change the 26th, to be a day of reflection, with public events and the appropriate traditions for such a day built by and for First Nations Peoples, where all other Australian's can attend, learn and connect. Add a public holiday on the 27th, as the 'national day', where we all celebrate together, as the multicultural nation we are. Less able to talk to people they don’t agree with? … Unfortunately, its not just a feeling … the international Edelman Trust Barometer is out …. and in the main it is not good news with Australia slipping significantly on key measures of civility, trust and polarisation. The good news is that we know what is causing this and we can act to address those issues. We recognise Australia Day carries significant emotional weight for many individuals due to its association with the arrival of the first white settlers and the ensuing impact on Indigenous communities. 📣 Splitting a country into regions or administrative divisions is a highly political decision! That's why they are often confusing and structured differently for each country. 🇸🇬 A good illustration of this is the council distribution in Singapore. Since 2001, Singapore has been divided into 5 administrative areas called Community Development Councils (CDC). The council boundaries follow those of existing political divisions. The role of each council is to manage community programs to promote social cohesion within local communities. Due to its political boundary association, the divisions are modified before each election every 5 years! Countries like Belgium or France merge or split into communes for political reasons, but redesigning the whole coverage so often is uncommon. #locationintelligence #administrativeboundaries #territorymapping
