As a patient, one of my biggest challenges in overcoming Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was understanding what it actually meant. It was only after grasping this concept that I could take a more active role in my own care. Unfortunately, most patients and the public remain unaware of this global emergency and how it affects them personally. While communicating the complexities of AMR is challenging, it must become a priority so that the seriousness of this issue becomes common knowledge. Unnecessary use of antibiotics is one of the biggest contributors to the growth of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antibiotics should only be considered for bacterial infections. World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) is observed annually from November 18–24 to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when some of the germs (bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites) that cause infections resist the medicines used to treat them. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials is a major factor in increasing the rate at which AMR is occurring. This makes infections harder—and sometimes impossible—to treat. Here’s what you need to know: 📌 How it spreads: Misusing antibiotics (e.g., for viral infections), overprescription, improper sanitation, and even agricultural use in animals can fuel AMR. 📌 Types: Resistance isn’t just about antibiotics! It also includes antifungals, antivirals, and antiparasitics. 📌 What we can do: Use antibiotics only when prescribed. Complete your full course of treatment. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁.   𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 is a fungal pathogen associated with outbreaks of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. Isolates are often multidrug resistant, limiting treatment options and resulting in high mortality. 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 can persist on skin and medical surfaces, making outbreak containment very difficult. Since 2016, 16 cases have been identified in Belgium, with 3 cases recording no link to a hospital admission in a foreign country, thus suggesting possible spread within Belgium. In 2024, 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 was added to the mandatory notifiable list in Flanders. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗠𝗥 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗔𝗣 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: 𝗵𝘁𝘁𝗽𝘀://𝗯𝗶𝘁.𝗹𝘆/𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗔𝗣𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰

Antimicrobial drugs are medicines that kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi but are increasingly losing their effectiveness due to constant and unnecessary overuse. This misuse has led to the emergence of mutated superbugs resistant to these medicines, making common infections harder—or even impossible—to treat. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) leads to longer illnesses, higher medical costs, and an increased risk of complications. It not only endangers individual lives but also spreads diseases, jeopardizing overall public health on a global scale. We must prioritize the responsible use of antibiotics, stop self-diagnosis, and always consult a specialist before taking any medication.
