The Arc of the United States’ Post

Independence is not a privilege; it's a right. “What if I was able to go across the country for the few years needed for my grad school? What would my career look like?” Zoe’s opportunities for grad school and an eventual career are limited because, as a person with a disability, she relies on support from Medicaid to live independently. If she were to move to a different state, she would risk ending up on a waiting list for services. It shouldn’t be so difficult for people with disabilities to access the support they need. Take a minute to use our easy form and send a message to Congress that #CareCantWait! https://lnkd.in/eRgxNDVZ #WeActWednesday

So true. This prompts me to ask "What if I was able to walk out of my house/apartment, lock the door, cross the street, and go to the store myself without asking permission or having to wait for someone to "escort" me?" To many people with I/DD this would be a dream come true. Why is this dream all-too-often ignored?

100% agree with you. There are invisible chains around individuals with disabilities that keep them not only in their states, but (in my son's case) also in their county of origin. Money doesn't cross lines, effectively keeping people in the same programs with the same services and no opportunities to explore beyond their own backyards.

Congress must make the Olmstead Decision into law. The HCBS rule was the first step but individuals with disabilities still do not have access in all states.

This is something I navigate with my clients who have physical disabilities and health conditions ALL THE TIME! The Arc of the United States, can you connect me with your policy folks? I'd love to chat!
