"'Volunteering' is a great thing, but in the context of creating a group it can feel like things are being 'done to' rather than 'done with' the community. Too often, disability services focus on doing things for individuals with disabilities rather than alongside. If we wish to truly follow the words of 'Nothing about us without us,' then we must break down some of the barriers that exist – individuals with disabilities, family members, non-disabled peers, and professionals must learn strategies to cross the cultural divides that can exist within our communities to interact with one another. There is so much joy we can find in connecting with those who are different from ourselves." Concerns raised over autism prediction paper - SpectrumNews | There is an increasing recognition of the value of including community members in research design, conduct and reporting. This includes incorporating people with lived experience in research, whether as a reference group or co-researchers. Gary, as a disability advocate with disability, recently participated in the reference group for two sets of guidelines for the NHMRC relating to the diagnosis and support of Australians with Autism. One of the things such inclusion can achieve is alertness for language that is rubbery or vague, or concepts with unclear relevance or value. An often repeated term in the disability space is, "nothing about us without us". #AHRECS #ResearchIntegrity #ConsumerAndCommunityParticipation # #ASD

While it is important to cast the spotlight on these individuals' celebrations, it is equally important to remember and raise awareness for those that still struggle with a lack of inclusion, whether it be in school or in the workplace. Join me and over 1,000 of my closest friends today in observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month #NDEAM2023! Why do we need to continue to shine a light on #disability employment? According to many studies Neurodiversity in the workplace is growing and their is still much work to be done: ✨85% of neurodivergent college graduates are unemployed or underemployed. ✨Being neurodivergent is more than being on the autism spectrum. This term includes mental health disabilities. ✨Significant racial inequities exist in diagnosis and treatment of neurodivergent children. ✨In a study of over 260,000 children younger than 8 years of age, up to one-fourth of children were undiagnosed, with most of these children being Black or Latinx. ✨According to recent research by the Child Mind Institute “The model that we have for a classic autism diagnosis has really turned out to be a male model." The ratio of boys to girls diagnosis is 4 to 1. #DisabilityIsDiversity #KnowBetterDoBetter
