The topic of accessing capital was the hottest subject at a recent The Urban Developer summit on the Build-to-Rent sector. CDL Australia's Cameron Laird joined a panel discussion on the competitive environment for capital globally, telling the summit investors were looking to spread their risk around the world. We think Australia's BTR sector has a very strong case for international capital, but the property industry needs more action from Federal and State governments to help us compete on the global stage. Construction of CDL Australia's first Melbourne BTR project is steaming ahead and we would like nothing more than the opportunty to create a significant portfolio in the sector over the coming years. #BuildToRent #BTR #InternationalCapital #GlobalInvestment

Industry Stakeholders This week we had the pleasure to meet another two of the chamber supporters. One of them is relatively new, Bridgepoint/Camray the other one, MacMed, has now been supporting us for over a year. For us, it’s not only a pleasure meeting our supporters, whom we regularly engage by phone, but spending some time catching up in person and discussing the challenges and opportunities our industry faces daily, I think it is the best receipt if we want to upscale and improve the industry. Camray and Bridgepoint Another meeting was with a recent member of ‘’the family’’. Not that they weren’t following us before but recently they decided to fully support our chamber and the work and vision our chamber is trying to promote. During our meeting with Ray and Lara (father and daughter), we discussed the challenges they as a company encounter daily. Being a contractor (Camray) that specialises in conservation and restoration works one of the main challenges they face is the lack of staff, especially skilled and trained personnel. On this front, it was welcomed the initiative by the government to increase the effort in plugging the skill gap in the various sectors within the built environment. Bringing foreign workers might be a short-term solution, but in the long run, for the good of the country, we need to ‘’sell’’ this industry to the younger generation. The satisfaction of those that work in this industry brings is second to none. Yes, earning a wage and a living is important, but important as well is being part of a project that when completed makes the individual proud of being part of it. As education is one of the pillars on which our chamber is founded, encouraging Ray and Lara, to support their staff in continuously developing their skills and expertise was a no-brainer. Following the recent events, it is evident that education (related to the built environment) is on top of the agenda. The government, through the BCA, will be doing its part, but the private sector is another main stakeholder. After all, it’s the private sector that will benefit the most from trained personnel. With the result of better-quality service and better-quality workmanship. It was a chance to raise some big topics that are key to the sustainability of businesses such as Steven A Hunt & Associates. These included: 🎯 The challenges that SME's face in becoming involved in ambitious development projects in the city region despite being well established businesses in the area. 🎯 Ways to ensure that graduates from Built Environment courses can be retained in the city region by the businesses who carry out the development projects and whether this could be incorporated into planning requirements or procurement frameworks. 🎯 Whether there is access to funding streams to set up academies for graduates to gain employment experience. 🎯 How local businesses should be given the same opportunities as larger rivals that have no long term presence in the area to help retain talent. #MIPIM24
