Theatre Habit had the opportunity to see the limited engagement of Blood of the Lamb by Arlene Hutton at The Sofia, Home of B Street Theatre This 60 minute, two person juggernaut of a play takes on the subject of when a woman’s body becomes tied up in the anti-abortion bureaucracy. The play is somehow both infuriating and cathartic. I am so grateful for the two actresses (Elisabeth Nunziato and Dana Brooke, captured below) who made themselves available for a post-show talk back to discuss the show and process with members of the audiences. The show runs for only 4 more performances. Please consider joining the conversation. Our review written by Mike and Kathleen Poe is live on our website. https://lnkd.in/gFgaemJY #theatrehabit #thingstodoinsacramento #sacramento #bstreettheatre

🎭 "Being taught drama can transform your life." 🎭 This theme was highlighted by both Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy at this year's Labour Party (UK) Conference, in which they both highlighted the critical importance of arts in education. The National Curriculum requires every state funded school to promote children's cultural development, preparing them for the experiences of later life. However, whilst the private school sector is able to invest in cultural education, the state sector has suffered a significant reduction in provision, due in part to the marginalisation of arts subjects in schools over the past twenty years. Children from low income are missing out the most because they are less likely to have cultural experiences outside of school. Furthermore, the ongoing cost-of-living crisis has led to a reduction in school trips, including theatre visits. Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre believe that every child has the right to go to the theatre, to experience the joy and opportunity that it can bring. It’s been almost 1 year since we launched #TheatreForEveryChild, our campaign to ensure every child goes to the theatre before they leave school. Over the next month, we’ll be celebrating some of the amazing work our members do to ensure young people have access to great theatre.

How do you make theatre accessible to adult neurodivergent audiences? Auckland Theatre Company is at the beginning of its relaxed performance journey and its Head of Strategy, Natasha Pearce, says that asking is the only way to create a programme that meets the needs of the community. “Our hope is that our programme will continue to improve and audiences will grow. "As one of the first arts companies to develop relaxed performances for adult and late-teen audiences, we know we will get it wrong sometimes. But we hope we get it right more often and that we learn from our mistakes. “We also hope that other organisations see that if we can offer theatre of scale and ambition and include relaxed performances in our season, then they can too.” Thanks for your great mahi, ATC. Read the story on our website: https://lnkd.in/gXKmkf5K In the photo, Ethan, Jessie, Dakota and Anthony, ATC's youth advisors' team, smile at the front of the stage with the empty audience seats behind them. #artsforall #RelaxedPerformances #neurodivergent #theatre

My latest episode of The Play Podcast.
When it premiered in London’s West End in 1960, 'The Caretaker' catapulted its author to fame and fortune. The play is set entirely in a single room in a dilapidated house, and presents the territorial battle between three men living on the margins of society. The psychological manoeuvrings of the men are dramatised in what we now recognise as Pinter’s cryptic mix of comedy and menace, along with his characteristic relish in the precision and panache of language. As we record this episode a new production of the play is playing in the Minerva theatre at the Chichester Festival Theatre, and I am delighted to welcome its director, Justin Audibert, to the podcast to help us explore Pinter's enigmatic work. https://lnkd.in/dSrsRicd

In our latest blog post, we discuss whether star power can make or break a theatre production. Is having a big Hollywood name attached always a good thing, or are there other factors involved when it comes to the world of stage performance? Here, we take a look at the key factors in creating the West End's next big hit and what household names mean for a new show. Take a look at From Slave Play to Wicked: is star power a blessing or a curse? below. https://lnkd.in/eBpR7w2g Feel free to share your thoughts and comments too.
