The nagging voice saying 'I don't feel ready.' It can be a normal part of the creative process. You want more time to refine your vision. You want to be certain it will be your best work. You want to feel proud of your precious creations. But your creative journey is a constant evolution. A string of unique opportunities to learn and grow. Uncertainty is bad for business. As creatives we're not just selling pretty pictures, or our flashy camera kit - we're offering a solution to a problem. The more uncertainty about that solution, the harder it's going to be to put real money on the line for it. 🎥 This is something I think is missing from a lot of conversations around professions like video production. Recently I've seen some big debates on LinkedIn about whether companies should specialise or focus on a specific niche, And while it's true a lot of the skills as a producer are totally transferable, I've absolutely found some real benefit to working with clients in science, tech and university sectors for 99% of the work we do. Often it's as simple as knowing we're all speaking the same language right at the earliest briefing stage - especially for clients who haven't had much experience commissioning things like video work before. A university client told me on a call last week that they were reassured by how much Wavelength Studio works in the HE sector 👨🎓 Now that doesn't mean that producers can get complacent or lazy, it doesn't mean we can take shortcuts and rely on cliches. If anything, the more I work in the same sectors, the more I want to push for fresh ideas and different kinds of content! But I've absolutely noticed that familiarity can reduce that feeling of uncertainty. And often that's the thing our clients really want to know - not which film school we attended, and certainly not which camera we're using! 😁 Where are you on the niche or not-niche debate? There’s no smoke without cliché. How lazy and overused ideas kill creativity. We have all done it. But it doesn't mean it’s right. Cliche’s are — •     Shortcuts  •     Easy fixes •     Obvious placeholders They are the bottom feeders of the creative’s arsenal and within this line I’ve bagged two. The ‘go-to’ for a lot of very average agencies and creatives out there. So, what is a cliché? The word cliché comes from the french for stereotype, a block or print that can be used repeatedly. It began to mean ready-made, often repeated.  A phrase or image that has been used to the extent that it has lost its original meaning. Over a number of years, I’ve worked with Chris Martin.  He took to putting up a Cliché list in the creative departments that he looked after. If any of his creatives presented ideas that were on the list, it was an instant fine.  Chris did fess-up to using most if not all the banned items at some time in his illustrious career. And full transparency, I’ve used them all too. Don’t worry, it’s very natural part of the creative process. When coming up with new ideas, our brains look for patterns, memories and data points that tally with the task. The brain puts those obvious, cliché, placeholder type thoughts at the front of our mind to reel-out. Just move past them as quick as possible, avoiding the lightbulbs, road signs, rollercoasters, palm fringed beaches and on to a place where the gold is. Whoops, done it again! The Mind of a Creative: The fear of Rejection and Criticism Rejection is a scary thing and the truth is not everyone can handle it. In fact, that's one of the reason why a lot of creatives hold back when it comes to creating stuff. A lot of creatives don't put out their work especially as beginners because of they fear that it would be rejected or heavily criticized by the public. Encouragement and constructive criticism is a better way of making beginners feel like they are actually progressing and they can do better. Some of us just want to learn. The process of visualizing an idea with just words for people in different, non-creative industries can be a mess. If we do not: - Communicate our ideas well, - Create a pre-production plan, - Develop a clear script from the beginning. The success of delivery and approval of that project will fail. In my studio, I love to create rough ideas from scripts to showcase the concepts behind the words and the possibilities for each story's improvement. If a script is not provided, brainstorming and sketch sessions with stakeholders are the best way to ensure and meet expectations.
