Working for a more inclusive world by bringing the concepts of universal design into the 21st century.
Are the lives of children really considered in our planning processes? The main reason for not walking to school is not the distance. There are several other factors at play here, particularly safety. However, getting to school and other activities is not a priority in land use and transport planning. Consequently, many schools are not conveniently and safely accessible by footpath or public transport. Result – they are reliant on cars. Traffic, personal safety, convenience in busy schedules, lack of safe, reliable public transport are key issues. Consequently, driving is seen as the only viable option to ensure children arrive safely and on time. See link for my synopsis of the paper

🚌With children returning to school over the next several weeks, let's not forget the importance of school bus safety as the new school year approaches! 🛑 At OHLA USA, we are committed to keeping our communities safe—whether it's on the job site or on the road. Remember to always stop for school buses, stay alert in school zones, and prioritize safety for our children. 1) Stay in the Safe Zone: Children should stand at least 10 feet from the curb while waiting for the bus. This helps them avoid the bus driver's blind spots and reduces the risk of being hit by the bus. 2) Follow the Driver's Signal: Children should always wait for the bus driver to signal that it is safe before crossing the street. 3) Cross in Front of the Bus: Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus where the driver can see the child. Never cross behind the bus. 4) Be Alert in School Zones: Slow down and be extra cautious in school zones and near bus stops. 5) Stop for School Buses: All drivers must stop when a school bus extends its stop sign and flashes its red lights. Never pass a stopped school bus. 6) Stay Alert for Kids: Watch for children who may dart into the street, especially in residential areas and near bus stops. 🚌 #SafeAndSound #SchoolBusSafety #SafetyFirst #OHLAUSA #BackToSchool
