Can a regimental war cry of the Indian Army be used in a commercial venture, albeit with a spelling change? The startup “Tagda Raho” which is on a commendable mission to introduce indigenous “akhara” (traditional Indian gymnasium) weights eg the mace, samtola etc, to the world, uses the war cry of the Assam Regiment “Tagra Raho” as its brand name, with a minor alteration of spelling. At the National Defence Academy (NDA), every punishment is a lesson, and every lesson becomes a cherished memory. One such experience that I would love to share and it remains etched in my mind is the legendary Sinhagad Fort punishment. Sinhagad Fort, perched atop a steep hill near Pune, is not just a historical landmark but also a rite of passage for NDA cadets. Known for its rugged climb, this fort has witnessed countless cadets enduring the trek as part of their disciplinary exercises. For us, it wasn’t just about the punishment; it was about resilience, camaraderie, and pushing beyond limits. Interestingly, the fort recently hosted an international audience. A contingent of 300 Australian military personnel, men and women alike, undertook the climb as part of their trekking exercise. This reinforces the universal appeal of Sinhagad, not only as a tourist attraction but as a test of physical endurance and mental grit. Historically, Sinhagad Fort is a symbol of courage and sacrifice. It stands as a reminder of the valor of Tanaji Malusare, a Maratha warrior who gave his life in the 17th century during the fort’s recapture. For NDA cadets, climbing Sinhagad is more than just a task—it’s a tribute to the warrior spirit and a lesson in determination. What starts as a punishment often transforms into an unforgettable experience. Sinhagad has taught me and many others like me , lessons that go far beyond its rugged terrain. It has instilled values that are essential for a soldier: perseverance, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude. A military humour - once I was undergoing my singharh fort punishment and there was a couple who has come to the fort for picnic,approached me for a click and said sir we are so proud of you and your frds who are doing all these exercises for the safety of our nation ?
