With every episode of SWEET TOOTH that I watch, I grow increasingly frustrated with the resistance I met while developing THE STARSEA BEACH SENTINEL SOCIETY as a family show. Why are platforms/networks so rigid about having a specific "shelf" on which to place a property? "If there are scenes featuring only adults, where will this show live?" Was a constant question as was the statement "Kids don't want to watch adults." As long as it's an integral, contained part of the storyline, I disagree. Demographic-crossing content that is engaging/relatable/accessible is just that. #sweettooth does an incredible job of doing exactly what I strive to do; create entertainment that can be enjoyed by a multigenerational audience. STARSEA features a lot less violence and language than ST - however mild - but is specifically designed for that "entertainment desert" that is the tween+family space. Maybe it's just because the ST series is based on an existing IP, but still, I applaud #netflix for having the vision to venture into territory that seems to be avoided by so many others. There is huge opportunity for quality content in this space. Let's start filling that need.

It's 2006 in the famed I.M. Pei headquarters of Creative Artists Agency and Lee Gabler is my last interview of a very long day. LEE: Jae, I'm not sure we should be doing this. We've been trying to get it right since the Coca Cola Polar Bears and no one can figure it out. JAE: ... LEE: You sure you want to do this? JAE: Yes. LEE: Really? (Jae reaches into bag for beautifully designed and painstakingly articulated presentation deck.) JAE: Yes, Mr. Gabler. I have some specific thoughts as to how CAA might approach brands in entertainment differently, alongside some creative ideas to exemplify this approach. LEE: Call me Lee. And I don't want to hear your thoughts or see your ideas. JAE: Lee. May I ask why not? LEE: Because you just told me you're willing to leave what I suspect is a very lucrative job in advertising and a comfortable life in Marin County to try to do what I just told you no one here in this building of exceptionally smart and motivated people has been able to do since 1993. That's all I need to know. To this day I haven't a clue if Lee thought I was crazy, stupid, ambitious, capable... But I got the gig! Thanks, Lee. Rest In Peace.

July 8, 2024 #breakingnews! Just passed a #brushfire off Southbound 167 at the Willis Street exit in #Kent. Immediately called #911 to #report it. They told me they got other #reports about it and the #firedepartment has been notified. Luckily, the nearest #firestation is extremely close by! It’s #Firestation71. I first saw black #smoke, which immediately caught my attention. When I got closer, I saw the #flames. Also contacted #local #mediaoutlets and #tvstations to inform them. Maybe they already knew but perhaps not. But I did think it was a #story they might be interested in and want to report on during their #broadcasts. #homeless people do stay in that area but I didn’t see any traces of #stuff nor any #people. The fire wasn’t huge but with our roughly 95 degree #temperature in this #heatwave and #vegetation being so dry, the fire could easily spread and grow! And my #dashcam did catch it but LI won't let the video be uploaded. However, I did include a #picture from the #camera.. So here’s my #newsreport and another #gooddeed for the day. I try to do at least 1 nice thing every day, like holding the door open for someone, etc. #ronauerbach #ronauerbachmba Ron Auerbach, MBA #news #journalism #citizenjournalist #citizenreporter #breakingstory #KentWashington #personalstory #personalstories #stories #massmedia #communications #digitalmedia #broadcastmedia #broadcastjournalism

I was fortunate enough to be part of a Motley Crew that changed the face of television 30 years ago this week with NBC-2000. It all seems so quaint and commonplace now, but in 1994, our team shocked the industry and immediately ushered in a host of imitators (as in everyone). NBC-2000 was nothing less than a revolutionary reinvention of the packaging of television: - Converting $100 million and 16 minutes of wasted prime-time credits inventory into reformatted credit split screens with original “promotainment” content (behind-the-scenes, trivia, and eventually promos), late local news cold opens, Tonight Show teases, and end-of-show sequences that we called “living credits”. - Reformatting prime-time by removing all commercials from between shows creating seamless programming flowing from show-to-show to cut down on channel surfing and tune-out during the breaks. - Packaging the network with lower 3rd animated promo bugs, animated Peacock sweeper transitions with radio DJ type voiceovers taking the viewer from show to show - giving the network personality and a sense of place - The first network TV end-to-end application of desktop video straight to air: Photoshop, After Effects, Imix Video Cube, Avid, Cinema 4D, Illustrator, etc. Jeff Rowe, Jim Cahill, Jim Atkinson, and I were the original creators and leaders of the concept, powered by a special Dream Team (some of whom had never worked in television) who pulled this thing off. NBC-2K was a skunk works: a startup incubator embedded in a large company. Our bosses, the network promotion legends of John Miller & Vince Manze, NBC Entertainment Heads Don Ohlmeyer and Warren Littlefield, and the legal / business affairs team led by John Agolia, NABET engineering teams like Lenny Duge and Ricky Powell, and the Affiliate Relations Execs courageously greenlit this and made the impossible possible, amongst many odds stacked against us. The project was only given the go-ahead about four months before it debuted in mid-September 1994, so in complete secrecy, a team was hired, a facility was built, and production began. Coincidentally, we launched the week of the premiere of Friends, E/R, and the new Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In that quarter, NBC went from 3rd to 1st, and NBC-2000 was one of the secret weapons contributing to the success of those early Must-See TV Days. As The Creative Director for its first two years, working with such a gifted team mixed with outliers and insiders, or as Steve Jobs once called “The Crazy Ones,” was the most exciting time of my career. Here’s a little recap reel created right after launch in 1994. https://lnkd.in/epD6bZjb
