Designing complex geostructures in dense urban areas, especially near high-rises and water bodies, requires meticulous planning and innovative solutions. The impact of excavations on surrounding structures and the ground itself demands careful consideration. Tony Gee and Partners is proud to have played a key role in the Central-Wan chai Bypass (CWB) project in Hong Kong, a major highway project with challenging ground conditions. Our Contributions: 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: Delivered a cost-saving design for a 560m long underground highway, including 110m with a very deep excavation of up to 33m below ground to create space for an underground ventilation building. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: Engineered the excavation support system, featuring a 1500mm thick diaphragm wall serving as both temporary and permanent works. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Controlled groundwater levels and pressures to ensure stability during excavation. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Designed and implemented a geotechnical instrumentation plan to monitor ground and structural behavior. Overcoming Challenges: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: The excavation's proximity to an elevated expressway demanded precise control of pier movements. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The challenging ground conditions required specialized design solutions to ensure stability. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The 33m deep excavation for the ventilation building posed significant engineering challenges.
