ATTN: HOLISTIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Do your patients complain about poor sleep, low energy, stress, or their inability to relax? I know mine did. Are your patients presenting with more than just a simple musculoskeletal complaint? I know mine did. Do you have an effective tool that works as well for your highly sensitised patients as it does for your athletes? Do some of your patients hit a plateau that they can’t seem to break through? Maybe more hands on treatment isn’t the answer. What if the answer to these problems was right under your nose? (it is!) The clinical application of what is popularly known as ‘breathwork’ is the fastest, most effective way to help patients change how they feel, in the moment and long term. There are a lot of ‘woo-woo’ aspects of breathwork that might turn some clinicians off, but the principles of respiration are anything but woo-woo. Teach your patients self regulation. Teach your patients energy management. Teach your patients stress mitigation. Teach your patients to breathe properly again! If you’re looking for an effective tool for positive patient outcomes, look no further than the breath. Comment ‘BREATHE’ and I’ll share with you exactly how breathwork can be the ultimate addition to your clinical practice.

GUIDELINES FOR WORKING WITH THE BODY #somatichealing #physiotherapy #mentalhealth 1. Inform the client when including body-oriented interventions: Don’t surprise the client with “new” techniques, but rather, explain what you are including. 2. Choice and control: Always ask permission, explain what interventions and exercises you are doing, and give options when possible. 3. Resource safety: Safety is of utmost importance. Find out what the client needs to feel safe (e.g., find a part of the body that feels good or strong and have the client periodically connect with this place by having the client imagine a safe place they can go to). 4. Resource for wellness and strength: Find somatic places in the body, therapy room, imagery, etc., that the client can associate with strength and wellness. Establish positive associations. 5. Track for feedback: How is your client doing? Is there dissociation or are they overwhelmed? If so, resource, slow down, or stop. Keep in verbal contact. If the client feels uncomfortable working with the body, stop and offer alternatives. Never insist on interventions the client does not want. 6. Track for signs of physical safety: (e.g., suicidal ideation, self-harm threads) and follow professional ethical guidelines. 7. Be trustworthy: Work within ethical codes, do not surprise clients, honor boundaries, stop when requested, be consistent and reliable, and be respectful at all times.
