A few weeks ago we launched the inaugural event of “The Greenhouse” series with a session titled “Fostering Resilience: Lessons from Life at Sea.” This event focused on the broad concept of resilience, particularly as it relates to social challenges—such as scarcity, housing, and social connection—that are deeply intertwined with the structure of our built environment. Our guest speaker, Luca Tausel, presented a compelling proposal on how lessons learned from living on boats could inform and support the development of resilient land-based settlements. This unique translation of water into earth made it the most fitting choice to kick off a creative brainstorming process. Watch Luca's talk and read the event write-up: https://lnkd.in/dBCE9ta5 Organised and summarised by Marta Delgado. Thank you to the participants!

🍁 October is here and we’re looking ahead to our event of the year, Isle Connect, happening October 23-24 in Liverpool! 💧 🎨 This is where invited guests and tech innovators get creative in the same space, exploring ideas and tackling some of the water industry’s biggest challenges. We’re not shying away from tricky topics and will be exploring critical themes like water quality, water resources, pollution and circularity. 🪂 We’re diving into these issues from every angle, and have designed Isle Connect to be a safe space to have open and candid conversations on topics that pose significant challenges to the water sector across the UK, Europe and globally. Get ready for insights from industry leaders: Piers Clark and Benjamin Tam will break down the latest technology and trends, with our water experts on hand. Day 2 will feature innovators showcasing the latest in cutting-edge water tech that’s shaping the future. 🌊 ✨But Isle Connect isn’t just about keynotes. At Isle we like to flex our creative muscles: did you know that facilitation is one of our specialities? We’re particularly looking forward to a thought-provoking session led by Oliver Raud, Principal Consultant at Isle. Oli will lead an interactive session designed to bring together diverse perspectives and help us immerse ourselves in creative solutions. He’ll be inviting participants to explore utopian and dystopian visions for the water industry, reimagining the way we provide water and wastewater services to meet the needs of the planet, our customers and broader society. 💡 In the lead up to the event, we’d love to hear from YOU, whether or not you’ll be attending. Over the next few posts, we’ll be asking questions to get your views flowing. Let’s start with this: 🌿🌪️ What do you think utopia or dystopia would look like in the water sector? Drop in five words that spring to mind for either — or both! ⬇️

Learning to adapt to a changing planet requires more than teaching scientific insights based on data about the past. The Fifth Element embraces this broader vision of learning. Indigenous wisdom was lost when universities narrowed education down to 'teaching disciplinary knowledge'. We now understand the limitations of the dominant paradigm: our planet does not function like a machine that humans can take apart, study in separate (siloed) disciplines, and control. It is a living system that responds to what humans do to it. Relearning to be part of such a living system requires new learning settings. Join the search.
The Fifth Element is an initiative hosted by The Club of Rome which seeks to create a future of equitable wellbeing within a healthy ecosystem. We shift focus from stakeholders to human beings, fostering connections and creating space for people and organisations to engage in their own learning processes. Through engagements and initiatives based on a combination of traditional wisdom and leading-edge science, we are working to catalyse the emergence of a human revolution. I wonder if the establishment of a new new national centre for retrofit of traditional buildings in Scotland wasn't the right time for other national level heritage organisations overseas like the The Friends of Gibraltar Heritage Society or the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, or the even farther laying Falkland Islands Museum & National Trust to reach out to Historic Environment Scotland and to propose sharing experiences? Considering that heritage science and research is at the heart of the new hub in its approach to developing best practice for the retrofit of traditional buildings, which require a wider access to skills pool or funding. Especially the "retrofit interventions required to improve energy efficiency in modern buildings are often inappropriate for these traditional buildings" is experienced here as well on a daily basis. Member for Bunbury and Minister for Regional Development; Disability Services; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing
We are living through a momentous period of change as we transition our energy systems to renewable. The change is both technological and social. It is imperative that we not only shape the technological agenda but we also share the vision and the leadership needed to transition effectively.
Seasoned conference goers will know that the value of these events is as much in the offline conversations as what's happening on stage, but also in the intent of the gathering. The intent of the South West Development Commission's inaugural Innovative Industries of the Future conference raises the ambition of Western Australian business and industry leaders, thinkers and power brokers to step up boldly to current challenges, cognisant of both huge opportunity and an urgent timeframe. I love the idea that WA still has the chance to tell a magnificent story about how we stepped up in this critical moment, so I can't wait to see how the Innovative Industries of the Future conference can impact the collective effort. Congratulations to Mellisa Teede and team for curating such interesting conversations. I'm looking forward to my panel with Dr Parwinder Kaur, Marion Burchell and Trevor Cochrane that asks "What role can governments, researchers, innovators, industry and the creative industries play in creating trustworthy platforms and content that engage communities and build social license on developments?"
