Keep good relations with vendors. I’ve been in food service for 20 years. 15 of those years has been in coffee. In all that time, one of my greatest accomplishments is the relationships I’ve built with vendors. Especially as a manager, keep good relationships with your vendors. It’s more important that customer retention. One if my main goals moving up to the West 7th neighborhood of St. Paul, to manage the cafe (and get myself acquainted) was use as many local/neighborhood vendors as possible. (That was not my supervisors opinion so a lot of our stuff was local to MN, but not West 7th. [side note, but don’t call yourself community oriented if you aren’t willing to invest in the local communities, instead of the greater metro at-large] So I got to know businesses around the shop. I started to build relationships. Nothing came of most of them, and the *one* that we did partner with, just left. I am now working for the vendor. His business is hiring… I applied and got the job after a brief conversation. Another reason, and honestly the main reason: If something is wrong or your need to change something. They do it. Quickly. I can’t even tell you how many times we’ve gotten something messed up, missing, delivery driver crushed it — see image, there’s bananas underneath this pile — and one call/email to our vendor and it was fixed within the hour. I hate Cintas with a fiery passion. BUT our delivery driver with them was a gem! of a human, and always went above and beyond for us. I miss my vendors so much. Seriously more than my regulars, which I love dearly, but the vendors. The vendors kept us running. [another side note: I’m finding out from vendors that my supervisor emailed them to tell them I wasn’t working for the company anymore which seems super weird…?] So I repeat: KEEP 👏🏽 GOOD 👏🏽 RELATIONS 👏🏽 WITH 👏🏽 YOUR 👏🏽 VENDORS 👏🏽

Why do we bargain with small vendors but not in big stores? I recently witnessed an auntie haggling with a vegetable vendor over a mere 10 rupees, and it left me pondering. We don't bargain at places where we are supposed to. Are we allowed to bargain in big malls and stores? We aren't even given the opportunity because of the very BIG BOARD that says "FIXED PRICE." Don't we just pay the price there without a word? Why not fight there? We often take advantage of the vulnerability of small vendors who work tirelessly to make ends meet !! These poor vendors don't have boards like these, but they have hearts full of innocence and honesty. They hardly make any money. All they get is that 10 rupees, which we try to bargain down !! If you can't support or help them, let's not bargain with them! Let's learn to support these small street vendors who struggle to earn❤️ !!
