I’m no Swiftie, but as a marketer, I gotta say I’m pretty interested in TikTok’s new Taylor Swift in-app experience, which excitedly claims to offer fans a weekly chance to complete new album-themed tasks to earn “themed-profile frames and digital beads to create their own in-app friendship bracelet.” If you complete all eleven weeks of tasks, you get — wait for it — a “celebratory final Swiftie profile frame.” From the included screenshot, example tasks include following Taylor Swift, following “Taylor Nation”, watching an Eras tour video, sharing the campaign with your own audience, adding a Taylor Swift song to your favorite streaming service app, and creating your own post based on a performance from Swift’s Tortured Poets Department set performance. I mean, this strategy is flat-out marketing genius wrapped in a shiny social package of pixellated friendship beads. It’s designed to keep fans hooked for weeks — all while turning them into a free promotional army. They’re driving engagement, creating UGC, boosting outreach, and it all ultimately feels like a win-win: they get to feel like they’re part of something special, and poor Taylor Swift gets more much-needed marketing since she’s such a low-visibility, under-the-radar singer-songwriter most folks have never heard of lollll. A full-on TikTok in-app takeover obviously isn’t the move for everyone, but the idea of setting up social challenges and providing digital rewards is solid.
