Continuing our #EmployeeSpotlight series, we catch up with Architectural Assistant Mathilde Leréec Le Bricquir. Originally from France, Mathilde joined us in 2020, having completed her Masters in Aberdeen. Recently, she passed her Part III Examination in Professional Practice and Management. 🔸 What led you to pursue a career in architecture? "I was always attracted to the arts and design and studied applied arts for a year before turning to architecture. I find architecture sits at the crossroads of many of my subjects of interest, including history, sociology, art and science." 🔸 What area of architecture particularly interests you? "I enjoy studying the evolution of architecture through the years and across the world as it’s so representative of a culture and society. Throughout my studies and my work, I’ve developed an interest in sustainable designs, particularly in conservation and historical environments." 🔸 What is the best part of your job? "The best part of my job is considering what a client is feeding us through their brief and then creating something unique and special for them, seeing them project themselves into the design and trying to exceed their expectations. It’s incredibly rewarding." 🔸 How has your career developed and been supported during your time with ABD? "I started here as a graduate straight out of uni with no work experience in the UK and just before lockdown. ABD supported me through what could be called a rough first year! I’ve since had many opportunities to develop in my role and was able to successfully sit my Part 3 professional practice examination last year with the whole team behind me." 🔸 Can you describe what tasks you perform on a typical working day? "On most days I’ll spend time preparing designs and drawings for client reviews or applications. I spend a lot of time on concepts, drawings, design statements and presentation material. On other days I can have three spreadsheets open, putting together project programmes on large commercial projects, trying to capture every task for design team members, lead times and deadlines, or managing information sharing and communication between all consultants." 🔸 What are you working on at the moment? "I’m currently working on a few domestic projects, almost all are listed buildings within conservation areas in St Andrews and Broughty Ferry. They bring a specific set of challenges and involve negotiation with local authorities and clients, concluding in creative ways to alter an existing building. I’m also working on commercial new-builds within the food & drink sector with large design teams involved, as well as some commercial conversions and renovations, mainly for hospitality and offices within Dundee and Angus. All these projects are at various stages, which makes for an interesting variety in my working week!" View details of more of our team at: https://lnkd.in/eB_AR2gs

My experience as Junior Architect in New York City Working as an architect in New York City certainly has its ups and downs. On the bright side, being in the heart of such a vibrant and dynamic city offers unparalleled opportunities for creativity and innovation. You're constantly exposed to cutting-edge designs and architectural trends, which can be incredibly inspiring. Moreover, the sheer volume and diversity of projects in NYC mean there's always something new and exciting to work on. From iconic skyscrapers to historic renovations, the range of projects keeps the work fresh and challenging. However, it's not without its challenges. The pace of life in NYC can be relentless, and deadlines are often tight. The competitive nature of the industry means you're constantly vying for projects, which can be very stressful at times. Additionally, the cost of living and doing business in New York City is notoriously high, which can put pressure on budgets and resources. And navigating the complex zoning and building codes can sometimes feel like a maze. Overall, though, the energy and opportunities that come with working as an architect in NYC outweigh the challenges for many of us. It's a city that demands the best from you but also rewards your efforts in countless ways.

What are some challenges that architects face when working on the restoration of heritage sites and buildings? Restoring heritage sites and buildings is a complex and multifaceted task that involves addressing a variety of challenges. Architects and preservationists must balance historical integrity with modern needs, all while dealing with technical, legal, and social issues. Here are some key challenges they face: **1. Historical Accuracy and Integrity **1.1. Authenticity: Challenge: Ensuring that the restoration work stays true to the original design and materials of the heritage site. This often requires meticulous research and expert knowledge about historical construction techniques and materials. Solution: Engage historians, preservationists, and experts in the specific period of the building. Use historical records, photographs, and samples to guide the restoration. **1.2. Material Sourcing: Challenge: Finding or replicating the original materials used in construction, which might be rare or no longer produced. Solution: Use modern materials that mimic historical ones or source traditional materials from specialized suppliers. Techniques like creating custom blends or using advanced replication methods can also be considered. **2. Structural and Technical Issues **2.1. Structural Integrity: Challenge: Addressing the structural weaknesses or damage that may have occurred over time, which can be complicated by outdated construction methods. **2.2. Modernization Needs: Challenge: Integrating modern amenities like HVAC systems, elevators, or updated electrical wiring without compromising the building’s historical character. Solution: Design discreetly integrated systems that respect the building’s aesthetic. Use modern technology to enhance safety and functionality while minimizing visual impact. **3. Legal and Regulatory Compliance **3.1. Regulatory Constraints: Challenge: Navigating complex regulations and preservation laws that dictate how changes and restorations can be made. Solution: Work closely with local heritage conservation authorities to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines. Obtain necessary permits and approvals early in the process. **3.2. Standards and Guidelines: Challenge: Adhering to international and local standards for heritage conservation, which may involve rigorous documentation and reporting. Solution: Stay informed about current standards and guidelines from organizations like UNESCO, ICOMOS, and national preservation bodies. **4. Cultural Sensitivity **4.1. Community Involvement: Challenge: Balancing the needs and expectations of the local community with historical preservation goals. Community members may have emotional or cultural attachments to the site.

Arch South, the service that offers information and support for those affected by sexual harm, has recently won a major award in the 2024 Tasmanian Architecture Awards. Arch South was awarded the Alexander North Award for Interior Architecture following the design work undertaken by Rosevear Stephenson and architect Jacob Britten. From the Australian Institute of Architects, ‘The award is given to the work judged to be the most significant for the advancement of architecture in each category. The award carries the name of a respected person and represents the pinnacle of projects in each category. There is only one winner of the Named Award in each category in any year’. The Awards Jury noted, ‘Arch South is the first example of a multidisciplinary design response to sexual harm in Tasmania, a heavy brief that has been lifted and resolved through a trauma-informed approach to a sensitive and intelligent design outcome. This project balances a complex brief of circulation, security and sensitive needs in a sophisticated and seamless outcome. The strength of the interior strategy lies in its secure and non-threatening environment. The positive outcomes garnered by this approach has been applauded by the police, and is being adapted for a diverse range of spaces nationwide’. Staff working within Arch value the calming environment and the thought that has gone into the flow of the co-located space. They consistently report that victim-survivors coming to Arch for support comment that the space makes them feel relaxed and safe. In particular, those who have engaged with police previously at a police station, comment how much better their experience has been coming to Arch. This is a great achievement and something all who have been involved in the establishment of Arch should be proud of. Lendlease Proposes Updated £1.9bn Smithfield Plans in Birmingham Lendlease, in collaboration with its design team featuring David Kohn Architects, has resubmitted plans for the £1.9 billion Smithfield area project in Birmingham's city centre. Last October, modifications were reported as the developer had to make significant design adjustments to its original planning application filed a year ago. This was prompted by objections from Historic England regarding potential harm to the historic cityscape and concerns from the government's heritage watchdog about disturbing 'significant medieval remains.' The revised plans also incorporate adjustments to comply with forthcoming changes to fire safety legislation, necessitating a second staircase in residential buildings over 18m tall. The masterplan for the 17ha site, home to Birmingham’s historic markets, was devised by Prior + Partners with New York High Line lead James Corner Field Operations. It features contributions from RCKa, Stirling Prize-winners dRMM and Haworth Tompkins, as well as local practices Intervention Architecture and Minesh Patel Architects. Significant alterations were made to the proposed market designed by David Kohn Architects and Birmingham-based ‘artist-run multiverse’ Eastside Projects. Originally set above the buried remains of the historic moat and manor house of the de Birmingham family, the indoor markets (Plot 5A) will now be relocated north to avoid the archaeology. https://lnkd.in/dGzuW7_t

Architects have long lamented the subjectivity of local planning processes. Many architects share their frustration with the perceived lack of design education within council planning committees and the lack of design directives on what would be accepted or not. This is where the NSW government and the Government Architect NSW saw room for innovation, introducing a publicly accessible interactive map that highlights their view of well-designed low—and mid-rise homes. The map includes more than 100 designs of housing across Sydney and surrounding areas, including dual-occupancies, townhouses, terraces, manor houses, and smaller apartment buildings. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully notes that the interactive map's important message is that the community should understand that “Heritage and new homes can coexist. We want to make sure the future homes and apartments across NSW are made for our climate, allow for natural light, and look to include community spaces.” Ultimately, this map will also be used by the government to outline its proposed planning reforms and objectives, an accessible and visual medium to engage the public and help them understand the role of planning in shaping our developing city. Are there any great projects you think are missing from the map here: https://lnkd.in/gyQc2jHm Pictured, 41 Birmingham by SJB
