The Andaman Islands are grappling with an acute water crisis, exacerbated by climate change and outdated infrastructure. Villagers endure days without water, relying on scarce and often polluted sources. Despite annual monsoon rains, poor retention and failing pipelines worsen the situation. Local leaders call for comprehensive policies, improved infrastructure, and innovative solutions like desalination plants to ensure a reliable water supply. #WaterCrisis #AndamanIslands #ClimateChange #Infrastructure #SustainableSolutions #EnvironmentalChallenges

As the climate crisis forces sea levels to rise, seawater is seeping into the groundwater sources of low-lying islands like Vanuatu, contaminating the supply and threatening the health of communities. Saltwater intrusion – when sea waters move on to land – is “a looming threat”, and one that’s likely to become a bigger issue, says ISF Research Director Tim Foster. In 2017, Tim visited 150 groundwater sources across 11 islands in Vanuatu and found approximately 10% “had salinity levels that would probably be beyond what people would accept as a drinking water source”. Now, this is likely to be worse. More here: https://ow.ly/L2lb50SYXlM #SeaLevelRise #SaltwaterIntrusion #Vanuatu #EnvironmentalHealth #WaterSecurity

World Water Day is a significant reminder of the importance of water conservation and ensuring access to clean water for all. The theme 'Leveraging Water for Peace' highlights the connection between water, peacebuilding, and sustainable development efforts worldwide. It is crucial for everyone to contribute to addressing the water crisis through conservation, responsible usage, and supporting initiatives that provide clean water to communities in need. Collaboration is key in making a positive impact in securing this essential resource for future generations. Let's commit to playing our part in safeguarding water for everyone. Our planet is experiencing changes such as rising seas, altered rain patterns, and shrinking river flows. These changes are leading to droughts in some regions and floods and coastal erosion in others. Additionally, pollution and overconsumption are threatening the availability of fresh, clean water that is vital for all life. Decreasing water supplies can lead to increased competition and tensions between individuals, communities, and countries, potentially escalating conflicts. #SaveWater #SaveLife #worldwaterday #saveoceans

UK WATER CRISIS ‘DOWN TO CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT FAILURES’ You would perhaps be forgiven for thinking that the UK, with its famously damp weather, would be relatively immune to the issues presented by the global water crisis, but this in fact could not be further from the case. Water is becoming increasingly problematic for countries all over the world as climate change takes hold and the UK is certainly not exempt from this, with ageing infrastructure, increasing urbanisation and pollution all having a big impact on both water quantity and quality across the nation..... #Water #waterindustrynews #waterindustry #waterefficiency #sustainability #waterresources #watermanagement

In Vanuatu, rising sea levels fuelled by the #ClimateCrisis are contaminating freshwater wells with seawater, rendering the water hazardous to drink. Highlighted in The Guardian, this demonstrates the urgent need for action on #OceanEquity and #OceanHealth, two key areas of the Ocean Panel's #OceanAction agenda. As small island states like Vanuatu deal with the devastating effects of the #ClimateCrisis, it's apparent that the transition to a #SustainableOceanEconomy is more critical than ever, to help protect vulnerable populations and safeguard our planet's future. Potable water resources are depleting due to a variety of causes, such as: •Deforestation impacting the hydrological rainwater cycle and aquifer recharge •Urbanization leading to over-extraction and stress on local rivers, lakes, and aquifers •Pollution contaminating freshwater resources •#climatechange causing #droughts, impacting rain patterns, melting ice packs and glaciers, leading to rises in seawater levels and flooding and •Resource Mismanagement The economic impacts of #industrialization, #globalization, and climate change and their effects on potable water usage and depleting resources are tangible and measurable. A novel “Water Positive (WP) Initiative was launched as part of the #unitednations Sustainability Development Goals (#SDG-6). A vital aim of the #Water_Positive Project is to balance the water footprint by implementing process efficiency measures, water purification, aquifer recharge, ecosystem #conservation, and other #watermanagement compensation projects to manage this critical resource, allowing governments, corporations, and organizations to contribute to global water sustainability and provide safe potable water resources to water-stressed regions of the world.

#Water is a precious resource. Another name for water is life. Increasing population, industrialization and urbanization, rising use of water in agriculture, #globaWarming, adverse effects of #climateChange, salinty increase bring severe impact on fresh and usable water. Global crisis and conflicts may arise in upcoming days due to #waterscarcity. #IntegratedWaterManagement, prevention of water wastage, #undergroundwater preservation are now demanding issues in the world. Otherwise, there is a considerable risk of hampering global peace, due to water crisis. "Water for Peace" theme of this year's #WorldWaterDay is very timely and commendable. Let's prevent wastage of water, be frugal in using groundwater, put utmost importance on integrated water resources management. Photo : UN-Water

Following development of the Integrated Flood Modelling Framework for the Environmental Pollution Programme project to facilitate sustainable solid waste management and flood resilience in urban informal settlements in South Africa, the Institute of Natural Resources NPC and University of KwaZulu-Natal, are engaging with key stakeholders and community members in workshops to validate the framework. The aim of this framework is to initiate coordinated action from government departments, non-state entities, academic scientists and local communities around flood and other risk response, infrastructure design, mitigation of flood-mediated solid waste pollution, and flood waste-induced destruction of infrastructure from storm water infrastructure blockages. Following assessment, we hope integrating these systems and coordinating action will play a valuable role in developing solutions to alleviate waste pollution and flooding impacts that informal communities endure, which are continuously exacerbated by climate change, and are applicable to other urban contexts in Southern Africa and beyond.
