Another Success story from our partnership with the University of Bristol in helping to create Employer Led Projects come in the form of two separate projects based on Motorway Blackspot Modelling- Exploring the Mystery of Blackspots: Unravelling Road Safety with Data 🛣️💡 Accidents on UK highways are all too common, with various causes ranging from mechanical failures to intoxicated driving. But what about those notorious "blackspots"? Can they be defined, and perhaps even predicted? Excited to share the findings from our collaboration with the University of Bristol Engineering, where two groups of students, supported by Synoptix, delved into this question. They investigated inner-city roadways and the UK motorway network, and surprisingly, both groups independently reached a similar conclusion regarding the definition of a blackspot: a fixed area with an above-threshold number of accidents. In urban settings, blackspots often clustered around junctions and A roads, while on motorways, incidents peaked on Sundays between 3-5 pm, with blackspots typically within 1km of a junction. These insights are invaluable. They not only shed light on where blackspots are most likely to occur but also inform our future efforts to deploy innovative solutions, such as our OPTIMUS system, originally designed for rail networks, to tackle the root causes of accidents on UK roadways. We're excited to continue driving progress in road safety and grateful for the collaboration with the University of Bristol. Let's work together to make our roads safer for everyone! Once again, with special thanks to Alan Champneys & Peter Oliver for all their help with our Employer Led Projects. #RoadSafety #DataDrivenInsights #Innovation #Collaboration #RailSafety #OPTIMUS #TalentPipeline #UniversityEngagement #AI
Synoptix are excited to share the results of our recent collaboration with the University of Bristol on predicting Rail Traffic Accidents (RTAs) in the UK!🚆💡 Together with a talented team of 5 students, we delved into data from the Office of Rail and Roads to develop a mathematical model aimed at forecasting future accidents. Through techniques like linear regression and correlation analysis, we identified three main contributing factors to RTAs: broken rails, signal failures, and the number of employees. Our findings underscore the importance of proactive measures in rail maintenance and staffing to enhance safety. By focusing on areas like rail and signal maintenance, increasing station staff, and refining safety protocols, we can work towards reducing the frequency and severity of RTAs. We’re proud of the teamwork and dedication that went into this project, and excited about the potential impact on rail safety in the UK. Let's keep the conversation going on how we can continue to innovate and prioritise safety in the transportation sector! With many thanks to Alan Champneys Peter Oliver, University of Bristol Engineering for all their support with the delivery of this Employer Led Project. 🛤️ #RailSafety #DataScience #Innovation #Collaboration #Research #R&D #TalentPipeline #UniversityEngagement
