The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) updated guidelines for fund names to tackle greenwashing and safeguard investors. The focus is on making sure terms like #ESG and #sustainability truly reflect fund policies. New guidelines emphasize an 80% minimum investment for ESG-related terms, Paris-aligned benchmarks, and a "transition" category. European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) publish final report containing Guidelines on funds’ names using ESG or sustainability-related terms The objective of the Guidelines is to ensure that investors are protected against unsubstantiated or exaggerated sustainability claims in fund names, and to provide asset managers with clear and measurable criteria to assess their ability to use #ESG or #sustainability-related terms in #fund names. It is established that to be able to use these terms, a minimum threshold of 80% of investments should be used to meet environmental, social characteristics or sustainable investment objectives. The term "ESG funds" has surged in popularity within the investment sphere, but its precise definition often remains unclear. This ambiguity is particularly problematic when the term is used in legislation or regulation. Over the past year, the CFA Institute Global Industry Standards Team, with assistance from the ESG Technical Committee (of which I am a member) has been working on “How to Build a Better ESG Fund Classification System”. This paper does not create another fund classification framework, but aims to help others, especially #regulators, improve the clarity and rigor of rules that differentiate between different types of funds.
