In 2022, I joined the Intel Ignite Europe program for the first time. Together with John Zimmer and supported by Markus Bohl's team, we help #deeptech start-ups elevate their public speaking and pitching skills to a whole new level. I remember my first encounter with 21 founders of 10 start-ups. At one point, I asked them, "Who among you has a PhD?" Eighteen hands went up. These academic entrepreneurs are some of the most intelligent people I have ever met. And yet, when it comes to public speaking, rhetoric, and pitching for funding, I can feel their pain. One of the biggest challenges for them is the necessary mental shift, as shown in the infographic below. What is beautiful to witness, every single time, is the magic that happens when they complement their academic power with rhetorical prowess. Then, Series A is only the beginning. #fminsights #academics #deeptech #pitching #investorpitch #publicspeaking

Interesting study on the correlation between unicorn valuation and graduate subjects of the founders👩🏻🎓🦄 Ilya Strebulaev and his team at Stanford University Graduate School of Business analyzed 1400 US VC-backed startups to shed light on the graduate subjects that correlate with unicorn valuations. Here's the rundown: 💥Aerospace/Aeronautic: A staggering 1.7x higher likelihood of founding a unicorn company compared to their peers 💥Medicine and Computer Science: Graduates in these disciplines aren't far behind, each boasting a 1.4x increase in their chances 💥Materials Science: A slightly polished edge, with a 1.1x likelihood However, not all fields show the same promise. Degrees in Political Science, Biology, and Law indicate lower chances of achieving unicorn glory. — Interested in more data-driven analysis like this? In academia, no one prepares you for starting a company. After that, there's so much that no one tells you to your face. When we talk to scientist-Founders, we share this stuff with them, because we want their ideas to work. Some of it is good news, and some can be hard to hear, but if you learn it now, you save so much time later. Our General Partner, Omri Amirav-Drory, recently had a private talk with UC Berkeley students. Honest and direct about starting a company in Techbio. And we're sharing the full talk live: https://lnkd.in/d7WbtFJ2 NFX

🚀 Exciting times at Aaltoes Project Fusion!! 🚀 We just wrapped up an incredible Materials Tech Bootcamp organized by me, Joni Pulkkinen, & Robin Gustafsson and I couldn't be more thrilled to share some highlights with you all! 💫 At Fusion, we are passionate about commercializing research and fostering the growth of Deep Tech startups in Finland. Our recent bootcamp was a testament to this mission, as it connected students with R2B groups from Aalto University and Helsinki University, bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and commercialization aspects. 🤯 The bootcamp delved deep into the latest advancements in materials science, featuring insightful sessions led by founders, venture capitalists, and experts in the field. It was inspiring to see students and researchers come together to explore new ideas and potential commercial applications of their research. ✍ 📈 Personally, this bootcamp was a significant learning experience for me. I gained valuable insights into event organisation and the importance of teamwork. Coordinating with a dedicated team to bring this event to life taught me the intricacies of planning, communication, and collaboration. Witnessing the enthusiasm and innovative spirit of everyone involved reaffirmed my belief in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. From exploring cutting-edge research to discussing real-world applications, every moment was filled with inspiration and learning. 🤝 I'd love to hear your thoughts on Deep Tech and the commercialization of research. Feel free to drop a comment or connect with me to learn more about Fusion and our upcoming projects! 😎✨ #DeepTech #Aaltoes #Innovation #Fusion #CommercializingResearch

Tech tantrums--when tech meets humanity The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Baroness Beeban Kidron "I ... talk about five red-faced, decibel-defying ‘Tech Tantrums’ performed by the tech sector when told that they must play by societal rules. These tantrums, two of which I was involved in and three that have been widely reported, reveal the disregard for societal norms by a sector that has successfully fought a battle to remain unimpeded by the rules that contain others. This is often referred to as tech exceptionalism." For background on the talk: https://lnkd.in/eJFm8cCw. https://lnkd.in/eqWY927K
