Today is the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, bipartisan legislation that seeks to make our nation one where every woman and girl can live free from fear, violence and abuse.VAWA remains just as important today as when it was first passed in 1994 and provides essential funding for our comprehensive services. The current administration is continuing to implement the VAWA Reauthorization Act of 2022’s expanded protections and services, including for survivors from underserved and marginalized communities, as well as investments in prevention, and new protections against online harassment and abuse.💜 #VAWA30 #SupportSurvivors #EndDomesticViolence

🎉 Celebrating 30 Years of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)🎉 Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a landmark piece of legislation that has transformed the fight against domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the United States. Step 1 - Take IT security precautions. Make sure your social media platforms are protected. This is literally the reason we built Privacy Party: to do the annoying work of locking things down so you don’t have the headache yourself ❤️ privacypartyapp.com
It's as important as ever to be aware of online harassment targeted specifically at women and ways to protect oneself against it. A renowned advocate for targets of online abuse Nina Jankowicz puts this matter in the spotlight. #WomensDay #IWD2024 #DontBeDeceived

Take this in. Count how many women you know or can actually see around you right now. Now ponder that at least 1 in 12 of those women will be a victim of violence. Every year. Police chiefs have today outlined the scale of the ‘epidemic’ of violence against women and girls. The statistics are frightening. Take a look at this video for some more. This is happening. It is happening to people you know. It may even be happening to you. Yes, of course men are victims too. But, women and girls are disproportionately affected. #VAWG is a stain on our society. All genders must pull together to take action on this, whether police forces, legal professionals or anyone else. For those wondering, here are some practical steps I think we can all take to do more: 1. Teach boys about #consent and eradicate harmful concepts such as “boys will be boys”. 2. Help teach girls about healthy relationships and bodily autonomy. 3. Learn the signs of abuse and know how to help / signpost for support. 4. Have more conversations about these issues. 5. Listen to and believe survivors. On every level, we all must do more. I’d be interested to hear what others think we can all do. Caroline Glass Caron Kipping Sara Davison

Many women have shared with us their experiences of family and domestic violence – and how when their abuser has been drinking, it’s like pouring petrol on a bonfire. Their stories have been reinforced by a recent global review of the evidence surrounding alcohol and gendered violence. The Prevention Collaborative – a global network of practitioners, activists, and researchers working to end gendered violence worldwide – found “research consistently demonstrates a strong link between men’s harmful alcohol use and the risk of violence against women and children.” Their review also found that “reducing harmful drinking can reduce the frequency and severity of violence and enhance the safety and well-being of women and their children.” This is further acknowledgement that addressing alcohol must be part of a comprehensive approach to preventing gender-based violence and violence against children. As National Cabinet reviews alcohol laws across the country to ensure best practice for preventing violence, we must continue to elevate the voices of people with lived experience, follow the evidence, and enact reforms that can change lives. We absolutely do address this in men's behaviour change work - and have done for a very long time. From referrals to AOD specialist services and providing session plans on the intersection of AOD use on the choice to use abuse and coercive control, specialist men's practitioners are on the front line of working directly with men using family violence. What I'd like to see are better connectivity in formal referral pathways and co-training between AOD counsellors and specialist FV workers - AOD counsellors need to understand the dynamics of FV and coercive control and how we navigate this in individual, case management and group work programs.

Nearly 1 in 5 crimes recorded by the police are domestic abuse related. Many more cases go unreported, with women afraid to report or lacking confidence in the criminal justice system. Behind those facts are individual stories – of pain, of heartbreak, of women failed. While there may have been an increased focus on violence against women and girls in the media and in politics, things are not changing fast enough. There must be a stronger commitment to addressing the legal and psychosocial needs of victims and survivors of GBV. The authorities must prioritise addressing GBV on par with other societal issues, recognising that prevention, not just response, is crucial, alongside addressing the systemic corruption often associated with it. Advocacy, support services, and changes in societal attitudes are crucial to create a safer environment for all. Let's continue working towards a society where everyone feels safe and empowered to seek help when needed. #BerthasLegacy #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #EndTheSilence #JusticeForSurvivors #BreakTheSilence #DomesticViolenceAwareness

There is no excuse for gender-based violence. Yet, 1 in 3 women experience violence throughout their lifetime. European Commission welcomes the agreement reached between the @EuropeanParliament and the @eucouncil on the first ever EU legislation on combating violence against women and domestic violence. The Directive criminalises: 🛑physical violence 🛑psychological 🛑economic 🛑and sexual violence against women across the EU, both offline and online.
