I often reflect back on my time as a firefighter/paramedic. Although many of the memories I wish I could forget, these are the ones I cherish the most. The enjoyment you see from kids as you educate them on fire safety, equipment, and day to day operations makes it all worth while. Fire safety education is important at all levels of an organization. I had the opportunity to participate in two events with our PD over the past few weeks. The first was ASHER (active shooter/hostile event response) training and second was the Law Enforcement Liaison’s Traffic Safety Challenge training and recognition event. I was privileged to see a side of public service that those outside the police and first responder world rarely get to see and it was an eye opener. Watching and participating in the training, I was amazed by how invested the officers were in their training. It wasn’t the training itself, but rather the moments between, when I could see the officers running through scenarios in their heads, the questions asked during the training and exercises, and how they helped each other during the training that amazed me. I also became acutely aware that my PD in particular is in desperate need of the right equipment. They definitely have the first responder mindset of getting the job done using whatever tools are available, but so much more could be done if they had the best tools for the job. What I’ve learned since becoming an EMT in 1994 and firefighter a few years after that is that emergency services are often not given the budget and training they need. But when events like Parkland, Surfside, Ft. Lauderdale Airport, and the FIU pedestrian bridge happen, they are the first to be grilled on why the outcome wasn’t better. I’m now keenly focused on making sure my teams have the tools and training they need not just to do their everyday jobs, but also to handle the one-in-a-million major events that seem to be happening more frequently. To my fellow Managers – take the time to attend training with your teams! It’s a great way to get a new appreciation of what they actually do as well as give you a first-hand look at what they need.

Point to it... Then go ahead and giggle at how silly that was. However...that drill WILL make a difference and make your workplace safer. Maybe that person didn't even know you had an AED. If you can't find it in under 1 minute, then maybe you just uncovered a bigger problem. It's that simple. P.S.
