While a lot of focus has been placed on how financial barriers prevent students from enrolling in and graduating from college, this op-ed argues that information deficits are also a barrier, one that isn't addressed as much as it should be. #GreatCollegeAdvice #HigherEd #CollegeAccess

In his recent article, Matt Gandal of Education Strategy Group discusses how innovative state financial aid policies are addressing the rising costs of higher education. With college affordability a significant barrier, states like Louisiana, Michigan, and Washington are creating targeted financial aid programs to help students pursue high-demand jobs and reduce barriers to re-enrollment for adult learners. More states need to take action, providing affordable, career-aligned education to fuel economic growth. #HigherEd #CollegeAffordability #WorkforceDevelopment #StudentSuccess
The cost of college is an enormous barrier to many students’ postsecondary dreams. While federal financial aid will continue to be crucial, there is also a major opportunity for STATE leaders to use their own financial aid programs to expand postsecondary access and success. Because they can move more quickly and nimbly than the federal government, state leaders are uniquely positioned to develop financial aid programs that are specifically suited to their populations and workforce goals. Education Strategy Group has just published a new set of resources about how state financial aid can be a powerful lever for positive change, and my latest column in Forbes highlights some of the innovative states who are leading the way. https://lnkd.in/euDtQ8NC

The number of students stopping out of school continues to rise - 36.8M adults have some college education but no credential. This presents several opportunities. The article below focuses on ways to re-enroll students - where to find them, how to engage them, how to offer them something different that better meets their needs. These are all good ideas - we need to find ways to get students back in school to get their credential. But the other opportunity comes earlier. We need to reduce the number of stop-outs. We need to improve the student financial experience, incorporate financial literacy, and make it easier for students to access, understand and pay their bills. We need pre-collections practices that work and payment plans that are easy for schools to administer and easy for students to sign up for. Yes, let's re-enroll students who stop out. But first? Let's try to stop them from stopping out altogether. https://lnkd.in/gMFza_Rf
