Gardening with Gundula: Propagating cuttings 🪴 This week we learn another way of propagating, and that is from cuttings. During this time of year, when we are cleaning our shrubs it is a great time to make cuttings whilst cleaning. Cut your plants down to where you see new growth appearing and use the tops for propagating, make sure they have many nodes from where the roots will eventually appear. Clean the bottom part of the cutting keeping only about three leaves, but be careful not to tear the plant. Keep your cuttings short and tight as their chances of taking will then be bigger, and stick them into a pot. You can plant more than one in a pot. Roots will start to appear in about two months and then you can decide to divide them and plant it into bigger pots or into the garden. #babylonstoren #gardeningwithgundula #transplanting #plants #propogation #perennialplants #shrubs #herbs #garden #gardentips #soil

Over the past few decades, we've witnessed the devastating impact of deforestation, with millions of acres of lush, vibrant ecosystems being cleared for various purposes. This alarming trend not only destroys the natural habitats of countless species but also contributes to climate change, soil erosion, and the disruption of vital water cycles. 🌼 5 Tips For Preparing A Beautiful Flower Bed 🌱 Grab your trusty shovel, put on those gardening gloves, and find the perfect spot. We’re going to show you how to prepare a beautiful flower bed. 1. The Right Start A beautiful flower bed starts with a clean slate. Remove all the rocks, weeds, and roots so your flowers won’t have any competition. 2. Seeds Or Nursery Plants? If you choose to plant seeds, you’ll want to start them in trays indoors. They are ready to plant in your flower bed once they have sturdy stems and the threat of frost has passed. 3. Edging Dig a shallow trench around the flower bed and maintain it throughout the season to ensure division between the bed and the lawn. 4. What To Plant You can even plant ornamental grasses or evergreen shrubs to give your bed year-round interest and structure. 5. Mulching Mulch is important because it keeps plants moist and helps keep weeds at bay. As helpful as it is, however, it can also be the death of your flowers if not applied correctly. Gardening with Gundula and Tenecia: Hügelkultur 🌱 This week Gundula hands over the reigns to Tenecia who takes us through the step by step process of building your own hügelkultur at home. Hügelkultur is an age-old way of building garden beds, originating from Eastern Europe, and it usually forms part of a larger permaculture system. It consists of various layers of decomposing organic materials. Traditionally, it is built from rotting branches, straw, logs and manure until it forms hump. The purpose of a hügelkultur is to gradually provide nutrients to the soil as well as retain moisture. The layers are as follow: - Top soil - Compost - Manure - Organic materials such as garden or kitchen waste - Straw and mushroom medium - Sticks - Large logs - Cardboard #babylonstoren #garden #hugelkultur #permaculture #gardening #gardentips #homegarden #soil #soiltips
