Grab your compass. Here’s what’s changed in the board landscape. 🧭 Boards are navigating broader, more complex agendas than ever before. As the scope of issues and challenges requiring oversight continues to grow, The traditional pipeline is struggling to keep up. Creating opportunities for board members with less conventional paths. 💻 Post-pandemic, many boards have made the transition to virtual board meetings. This shift has increased the frequency of meetings and introduced new dynamics in board communication and decision-making. 👥 There's a noticeable increase in the creation of advisory roles, shadow boards, and board apprenticeships. These positions provide vital support to the main board and exciting opportunities for the next generation of board leadership. 🦢 Boards are increasingly required to steer organisations through a string of black swan events. They need a good number of board members who are not also executives elsewhere. So that when the swan hits the fan, the board doesn’t return to their day jobs. TLDR; These changes underscore the importance of adaptability, diversity, and a strategic succession plan. --- Love these insights? I wish I could take credit for them. the Boardroom is proud to partner with Heidrick & Struggles to provide our members with the knowledge and the network they need to secure their first board position. Ask me how.

I have spent the best part of the past year on a Clore Leadership fellowship programme, essentially bettering myself (or at least, trying to). This has been an utter joy and privilege, but I’m not going to pretend that the constant self reflection and striving hasn’t been a little…overwhelming at times. Am I a better person yet? How much better? How will I know when I’ve hit peak better? If I do this course, will I have done enough bettering to have a day off? I tend to not really do things by halves, throwing myself into whatever I’m doing with everything I have. But recently I’ve been pondering the value of doing a bit… less. Although ‘less’ perhaps isn’t the right word for it. Working in theatre for so long, designing projects that have to tick more and more boxes to win funding, increasingly needing to stand out and push boundaries has, I think, skewed my sense of value. A working lifetime of proving how EXCELLENT and GROUNDBREAKING and BRAND NEW a project or event has been has, perhaps, made me forget the joy and power of the simple. Perhaps it’s not ‘less’ but a growing trust for the simple. For carefully crafting things and then letting them just be. And a few recent projects have powerfully shaped this thinking. One is The Gathering- Chris White and I ran the pilot last week- an event bringing creative and community organisations together to share what they do, how they do it & what they're hoping for. It was a simple idea- get these 2 separate but overlapping groups together & invite purposeful conversation. There were lightning talks, pizzas and biscuits, all the pretty tablecloths from my kitchen and jars of flowers from my garden. It wasn’t snazzy or complicated. But the room just buzzed. People met. Relationships began. There were things that we will tweak, sure, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Another was a recent STITCH workshop I ran for The Matrescence Festival led by Lizzy Humber. I had lots of exercises and prompts planned but actually, in the moment, what it needed was space. To just be. There was a table full of dreamy fabric, embroidery hoops and company. Anything else would have got in the way. And then a new trusteeship position, where I’m having to lean in to not DOING, but BEING, listening, asking questions, thinking, lending ideas and sometimes challenges, but not necessarily being the one doing the doing. It’s hard to trust the value of letting things be simple, but I’ve also realised how much more sustainable this can be too. It's a practice, trusting what you bring, and I'm a total novice. A dear friend ushered in my 41st birthday the other day with the question “what are your hopes for this year?”. I briefly thought of all the growing I could do, the jobs I’ll chase, the courses I’ll go on. But actually what I’m really hoping for is to be able to take a tiny holiday from the striving and the self analysing. And to just be. 📸 Appleton Event Photography & The Daylight Collective

Over the last 5 weeks or so I have taken part in AAR's Business Development Apprenticeship collaborating with other sales people within the industry to better understand how to nail the pitch process. All the way from creating our own agency, to the RFI process and having a chemistry meeting with Chris Hooper at Netflix! If I could share a few of the takeaways they would be: ✍ Edit. Edit Edit. Ultimately less is more, not for there being less opportunity to be scrutinized as ultimately brands are looking at more ways to not take you onto the next round than not. 🥂 The best pitches are like dinner parties. Storytelling is an art form and creates an atmosphere that brings the prospect in. There is a difference between talking over one another and finishing each others sentences. The same can be said when saying phrases like: "Now I'm going to hand over to..." or "I'm conscious of time" it just shows a lack of cohesion. 💭 People will forget what you said but not how you made them feel. Be passionate, be proud of the work that you have done and bring it back to your values and the art of storytelling. ⭐ The importance of values. In the exercise it was really funny to see how many of us all had similar values but interesting to see how they were all demonstrated throughout the process. At Born Social ours are felt throughout the business on a daily basis all the way through to when we pitch too and what I feel sets us apart. Smething on reflection I notice even more now. 👏 Huge shoutout to my co founders at Fifth Element Media - Paige Spencer, Josh Hood, Marie-Anna Thoma and Lucy Prince 👏 and Thank you too Hannah Astill and Paul Phillips at AAR for putting on a really insightful course full of useful feedback and having a story for everything. #businessdevelopment #salestraining #bestpractices
