uh oh, not good news. This is not the FTC, SEC, or even congress coming after #apple, this is the DOJ. Big difference, their teeth can take a bigger byte and the only remedy, if the ruling is not favorable, is appeal. The EU is successfully prosecuting a campaign of change for “good” and users are benefitting for better or worse, well at leadt in the EU. - Now iPhones and other #apple devices support usbc. - Now users in the EU can install, with contingencies, #apps from 3rd party app stores (sideloading) - Now, 3rd party web browser engines can be used instead of Chrome, as an example, having to use Safari engine in mobile browsers. So is this a good thing forcing #apple to give up exclusive access to private apis and hardware capabilities so that 3rd party developers can explot and enjoy the same capabilities in their apps? #youdecide #litigation #doj #ios #iphone #ipad #antitrust

A recent court filing exposed a massive deal between Google and Apple. The lawsuit against Google by the US government revealed Google paid Apple a whopping $20 billion in 2022 to be the default search engine on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This raises concerns about Google's dominance in search. The lawsuit accuses Google of using its size to bully competitors by paying Apple to keep them out. The $20 billion figure, confirmed by Apple's Senior VP during the trial, wasn't publicly known before. What started as a free service became a goldmine for Apple. By May 2021, Google was reportedly paying over $1 billion a month to Apple, which amounted to a significant chunk (17.5%) of Apple's profits in 2020. #google #apple #techgiants #googlesearch #ipad #iphone #mac #searchengines #antitrust #internet #technologynews

Today, the U.S. Department of Justice and State Attorney Generals agreed with the modern EU approach to #antitrust: exploiting participants of an artificially walled-off ecosystem is not acceptable. The DoJ’s powerful complaint condemns many of the practices which had equally been identified as problemtic in Europe. ❌ 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐬: Apple disrupts apps with broad functions, hindering consumer flexibility across smartphone platforms. ❌ 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠: Apple blocks cloud-streaming apps, preventing access to high-quality games and applications without pricey hardware. ❌ 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: Apple compromises cross-platform messaging quality and security to retain iPhone users. ❌ 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬: Apple restricts third-party smartwatches, pressuring users to stick with iPhones for full functionality. ❌ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝-𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬: Apple prevents tap-to-pay features, stalling cross-platform digital wallet development. Overall, the US complaint highlights Apple's broad-reaching impact, affecting various sectors like web browsers, video communication, news subscriptions, and more. It is great to see that after so many years of antitrust under-enforcement in the US, they are catching up to address the worrying economic realities in digital markets dominanted by a handfull of companies.

Courts, Regulators Pose Threat To Apple Services Revenue in 2024. Court cases and regulatory actions are causing uncertainty for Apple's highly lucrative $85 billion services business. The U.S. government's antitrust lawsuit against Google has raised concerns about whether Apple will continue generating billions of dollars each year by making Google the default search engine on its devices. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly preparing a case that could challenge Apple's control over its App Store operations. The European Union's Digital Markets Act, which requires compliance by March, has already prompted Apple to agree to allow "sideloading" in the EU, enabling users to download apps from outside the App Store. As Apple's financial performance increasingly relies on services, such legal and regulatory challenges could have a significant impact on the company's future trajectory.
