"It’s not unusual for lawsuits to yield results before other forms of regulation kick in—in fact, that’s exactly how the US has handled new technologies in the past," Melissa Heikkilä (MIT Technology Review) citing Mehtab Khan. In other words, for better or for worse, courts may take the first steps toward regulating AI. That means we've got to make sure courts use all available tools to reach technically accurate decisions. How to go about nudging courts in that direction is the crux of my Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies article. Give it a read and let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/evwfvm5H

AI development in Europe
Council of the European Union: Council reaches political agreement on the #use of #super-#computing for #AI development The Council has reached a political agreement on a regulation to expand the objectives of the European High Performing Computer Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC), aimed at boosting Europe’s leadership in artificial intelligence (AI). The regulation adds an additional objective for the Joint Undertaking: to develop and operate AI Factories in support of an artificial intelligence ecosystem in the Union. AI Factories will be entities that provide AI super-computing service infrastructure. The regulation will also make the Union’s supercomputing capacity further available to innovative AI European startups to train their models.

The most critical work in AI today is ensuring its safety and robust governance. We can’t afford to rely solely on tech companies to govern their own AI models because their primary drive will always be profit. Independent oversight and stringent regulations are imperative to protect society from potential misuse and harm. Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)
