I just discovered this incredibly salient speech by Yuval Noah Harari. He describes the near-term concerns regarding AI in terms of being used for increased psychological manipulation through language alone. This is true today, well before AGI exists. In fact, much of today's polarization can be attributed to primitive AI algorithms that create echo chambers in social media. He doesn't explicitly state what I see as a key component today, which is that AI will be employed increasingly by nefarious actors to manipulate us, well before an AI ever does so on its own accord. https://lnkd.in/gDpK_tFv #Hoff

Hassabis takes us into the journey and capabilities of AI. It took less than 20 years from winning Atari to get AlphaFold, an AI model that in less than one year have mapped all 200 million known proteins. This is a huge remarkable task knowing that we had only 150,000 proteins mapped and it takes a profesional his/her full 5 years PhD to unfold one!!! . The company has given away to Science - Humanity the Rights for this humongous and potentially prolific knowledge. This is setting a new paradigm in our quest for knowledge. Hassabis discusses the next frontier—AI's role in deciphering complex mysteries of the human mind, our health, and the cosmos. Hope this talk gives an optimistic view to the World, in an environment embedded in the traditional fatalistic view with which many have historically welcomed progress. We Sapiens do have our altruistic code well impregnated in us. Otherwise, it is very unlikely that the ~8 billion os us currently inhabiting this World could live with the current relative tranquility and harmony well enjoyed for so much time.
