I don’t like high rises without balconies. There, I said it. Maybe it’s just a personal preference of mine and not a market trend, but something about not being able to easily step outside bothers me. Although it is cold most of the year and we can’t quite enjoy balconies like someone in California could year-round, I believe them to be a fundamental part of my choosing of a condo or apartment. There are 4 types of balconies: Fully Recessed, Juliet, Cantilever and Semi-Recessed. I would consider the most useless of these to be the Juliet Balcony (or the popes balcony). In parts of Eastern Europe they board up these balconies to create an extra room, whilst sometimes needed, I believe it takes away a crucial part of human habitat, being able to step outside without walking through a large building, and taking the elevator or stairs down in order to do so. What’s your preference? Does this matter to you as much as it matters to me?
