Our journey began with a stroke of fate and a spark of chemistry. It all started when our co-founder, Ben, faced an unexpected layoff from his six-year role as a videographer in the marketing department of a leading fintech. With a wealth of experience in video production, Ben was determined to carve out his own path. Initially considering photography only, his passion for video quickly drew him back. Then came a pivotal moment: Dark Matter Technologies reached out, seeking a videographer to capture their conference in Miami Beach. Ben knew he needed a reliable partner and reached out to Alex. Though they weren't business partners yet, their collaboration during that conference was nothing short of magical. The synergy was palpable, and it was clear they had something special. During that vibrant conference, Wave Loop Media was born amidst the energy and excitement. We realized our combined strengths could create something extraordinary. Our focus became clear: to produce high-quality corporate and business videos that tell compelling stories and capture the essence of brands. 🏔 Paramount Global is officially merging with the production company Skydance. On its first investor call following news of the merger, the company unveiled a new logo as part of a presentation to investors. It reads more like the launch of a private equity firm than an entertainment company. The new logo uses Paramount’s legacy mountain motif and circle of stars, but replaces the media company’s script wordmark with a new serif version that gently arcs with a curved line underneath. It’s set in what appears to be the same font and arrangement as the Skydance logo. The traditional all-caps serif and thin strokes, when paired with its royal blue background, creates a wordmark resembling those in corporate consulting and investing, like McKinsey or Citadel, rather than other entertainment companies and streaming services, which largely use script or sans serif type. Back in 2015, Paul Charney, Kenny White and I made what some might have called a very silly gamble. We started Funworks because we truly believed that "fun" wasn't frivolous but a solid weapon against advertising’s biggest challenges (and everything we loathed.) Misalignment, misbriefs, broken budgets, invisible work, inertia, exhaustion, etc. We thought fun could help tackle them all. Not just pool tables or having more happy hours with clients (nothing against those things). We were hellbent on changing the traditional “siloed-slow-expensive” agency process by incorporating much of what we learned from sketch, improv and design thinking. Fun could align us faster with clients around bolder ideas that moved consumers. (Hence “works.”) Over the past nine years, what started as a gut feeling has been proven time and again by scientists and psychologists much smarter than us-- and the results we've achieved with our clients. Fun brought together over 70 employees, 100+ brands, and countless clients (I mean, technically we could count them, but that seems like a weird assignment.) After Covid, the climate of the industry, made us question our love for it. I decided I did--especially the way we were doing it. And Kenny and Paul decided they didn’t as much when we started. That’s when we realized another by-product benefit of our process: YES, we would part ways, AND we’d still love and help each other however we could. They started another company called Funmentum Labs and I would keep and run Funworks alongside the amazing Fiorella Juarez, MBA. Cut to today, the advertising industry has become a reflection of the world as a whole- a lot of fear, confusion, desperation and, heartache. All of which is completely understandable. It seems we’re facing ten times the challenges and uncertainty it once was.    Fun can help a lot of it. But it’s not the only tool needed to overcome them.  We need savvy tech and passionate, skilled, curious people and partners who know how and have desire to use them. Personally speaking, those people need to be incredibly optimistic and fun, too. That’s why I’m extremely happy to announce that Funworks will be joining, Barrett Hofherr.  In a world that sometimes feels heavy with challenges, their "Optimism Always" philosophy resonates deeply with our own belief in the power of positivity. Together, we want to tackle the evolving landscape with a potent mix of proven fun, cutting-edge tech, and passionate creativity. It's a new adventure, and I couldn't be more excited to embark on it with this amazing team. To everyone who's been part of the Funworks story so far—thank you. When Will the Magic Happen at Warner Bros Discovery? Warner Bros Discovery seems stuck in a vanishing spell when it comes to earnings expectations lately. The media giant keeps having to use its wizardry to adjust financial forecasts lower every quarter and sell new accounting metrics to investors who aren't buying it. But every magician knows you can't keep pulling disappointments out of the hat forever before the audience starts to lose patience! So when will WBD wave its earnings wand and call out the magic words for a true turnaround? Remember when the merger was the only solution to build scale to combat Netflix's war chest? Then back to the future as a studio that sells them the best shows and movies from their own and operated platform. Will David Zaslav and his sorcerers brew up the right potion to get audiences cheering soon? Or will earnings troubles cast a lasting curse on the newly merged company? Either way, expect some earnings magic...or disasters along the way!

Had a bit of a classics film session at the weekend and was watching Casino (it really is a belter of a film), and it reminded me of a chat I had with Rankin R. at a StudioSpace event last year, about why brands should always work with grown up agency partners to help grow their business. Bear with me the two are connected, well sort of. The analogy I put to him was about playing with loaded dice = getting a guaranteed result, all risk removed. As I see it that's what you get when you work with highly skilled, experienced and proven partners. But all too often brands seem to prioritise budget, opting for low cost options, opening the door to inexperience and unproven partners who massively dial up the risk factor. AKA rolling the dice and hoping. Don't get me wrong, sometimes the result can be very good, but many times it won't be. Personally I dont think its worth the gamble. It usually leads to a sense of deep dissatisfaction and the need to throw money at the problem, again. So I'd always advocate loading the dice and working with proven partners, people who have made a lot of highly effective, ROI rocketing, award winning, game changing work for brands across all sectors. And yes I am talking about people like our lot at the Orange Panther Collective (affectionately know as OPC). With over 60 years experience banked by our 3 founding partners alone, working on some of the biggest brands on the planet, from Guinness to Red Bull, McDonald's to Coca Cola, the FT to Patek Phillipe, Audi to BA, the BBC to Meta and many many more... we remove the risk. So, next time you're weighing up the options, screw Joe Pesci and co and load them dice. 🎲🎲
