I recently came across an intriguing article that sparked some reflection on my own career journey. All of the jobs I've held have been online. Initially, this was simply due to the available opportunities. I wasn't opposed to working in person. However, after participating in numerous online internships, I realize that transitioning to a traditional 8-hour, 5-day workweek on-site wouldn't be straightforward. Many high achievers I know and admire are notable for their adaptability. They excel in any work environment—be it remote, in-person, or hybrid—because of their diligence, dedication, and passion for their work. There's a prevalent misconception that remote work breeds laziness. In reality, those who are committed to their careers understand that remote work offers significant convenience and flexibility, and they leverage these benefits to advance their goals rather than exploiting the system.

Why GenZ rejects the antiquated idea of "full-time, in-person" work... And good for them!!! Blog Post - Before we dive in, let's acknowledge that there are exceptions. Some careers and roles require in-person presence. I'm talking emergency room doctors, construction workers, client-facing hospitality staff.   I don’t care whether you come into the office at 9 am. I don’t care if you choose to work from home or not. I don’t care if you work from the garage while they fix your car. I hired you for a job and I trust you to get it done. Just let me know what you need from me to be successful in your role. And I will show up for you. Life happens! You don’t need to justify to me why you need a day off. You don’t need to explain how sick your child is to leave early. You don’t need to apologize for having a personal life. Yes, I care about results but I also care about you. We are all human and we are all adults. I lead people. I don’t run an adult day care centre. Simple advice for anyone hiring: 1. Select the right people. 2. Agree on deliverables (be crystal clear). 3. Provide proper tools and support. 4. Get out of their way.   Lost employees should caption to investor’s report as sinking assets!!!

It seems a simple lesson from MBA programs is often missed. As a leader, your job is to take care of your team. This flows down to the people who are doing the work. The people who are doing the work are making the money for the company you are managing. In today's virtual environment many jobs can be done wherever there is a computer and an internet connection. Global connectivity lets your employees take care of their business while looking after your business. Everyone wins.
