Celebrating World Patient Safety Day #WorldPatientSafetyDay on 17 September calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. This day unites patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, healthcare leaders, and policymakers in showing their commitment to patient safety. Heart Health India Foundation, India’s first patient-led NGO focused on heart health, stands at the forefront of advocating for patient safety. As advocates for patients' needs and preferences, patient organizations like ours ensure these factors are prioritized in decision-making processes. Patient safety encompasses more than just health, diet, and medication recommendations. It involves understanding the complexities of heart health emergencies and providing comprehensive support. For instance, a heart attack, often caused by a blocked artery, can sometimes trigger sudden cardiac arrest, an electrical disturbance in the heart. These emergencies require sensitive handling of both patients and their families. At #HeartHealthIndiaFoundation, we focus on preventing heart diseases, providing support during emergencies, and offering crucial post-care. On this World Patient Safety Day, we emphasize the importance of patient-centered care and the role of patient organizations in enhancing safety measures. Let’s unite to ensure that every patient receives the safe, respectful, and compassionate care they deserve. Join us in our commitment to improving patient safety. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of patients and their families. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #PatientSafety #HeartHealthIndia #PatientAdvocacy #HealthcareSafety

The year 2021 saw a significant peak, with 14,246 ambulance registrations driven by COVID-19's second wave. This highlights the critical role these lifesaving vehicles play during public health emergencies. It underscores the need for sustained investment and strategic planning to bolster our emergency medical services, ensuring timely access to care for all, even in the face of crisis. US, UK & EU, the developed countries, have a typical government hospital protocol, which majority of its population use as their private medical facilities as very expensive - while in India one can walk-into most of private medical facilities and get an early treatment at an affordable cost. In US, UK & EU if the patient condition is not critical, its not considered an "Emergency", which are in majority of the cases. So, the poor patients are left to wait for weeks for consultation/investigation and their condition get deteriorated vs. availing early consultation/investigation in India at an affordable cost. We had 2-cases in our own family, one in EU & the other in UK, where the simple cases was translated to "terminal" just due to excessive delay in receiving necessary treatment /investigation. Also, it is cheaper and fast for someone (Indian) to fly to his/her home City in India and get immediate treatment/investigation done. The total treatment cost (including flight tickets) could be cheaper than waiting & taking Private medical route in US /UK/EU. Finally, "Time is Essence", so from my personal experiences, India would score over US/UK/EU usual medial system in terms of both faster turn around and the associated costs!

My dad's friend, Harish Uncle, once visited us and stayed with us for couple of days. He was my dad’s roommate from his medical college days, now settled in the U.S. Harish Uncle accompanied my dad to his clinic and hospital since he was travelling alone, following him through his daily routine. He was amazed by how many patients came in each day and how tirelessly my dad attended to each one. As a consultant in the periphery, my dad would sometimes even have patients knocking at 3 a.m., and he’d open the door without hesitation. I remember Harish Uncle asking, “Hamsath, what if someone comes with a knife and attacks you?” My dad simply replied, “These people come to me in emergencies. It’s my duty to open the door, never thought they could attack me”. Dr. Harish then mentioned that he sees only five cases a day back in the U.S., and patients don’t have direct access to his contact details or coordinates to where he stays. My dad laughed, saying he’s had days where he’s seen 400 patients in a stretch. India may not be a “developed” country, but because we’re not, we enjoy certain privileges, like the ability to meet a doctor or specialist right away, something that could take months in a developed country. Be grateful for the services you get in a developing country. Sometimes, they’re better than those in developed ones. I am proud of the Indian healthcare system and thank all healthcare workers who work day and night to save countless lives every day, selflessly.
