Beyond BMI: Bariatric Surgery for a Healthier You Bariatric surgery, often associated with individuals with a very high Body Mass Index (BMI), is a life-changing option for many struggling with weight-related health issues. While it's true that individuals with a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 with co-morbidities, are often considered prime candidates, the reality is that bariatric surgery can benefit a wider range of individuals seeking a healthier life. The misconception that bariatric surgery is solely for the "morbidly obese" can deter individuals who are struggling with weight-related health issues but may not meet the traditional BMI criteria. These individuals may experience conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or joint pain, all of which can be significantly improved through weight loss. Bariatric surgery offers a powerful tool for achieving sustainable weight loss, leading to a cascade of positive health outcomes. It can help regulate hormones that control appetite and metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce blood pressure, and alleviate joint stress. The benefits extend beyond physical health, impacting mental well-being and overall quality of life. If you're struggling with weight-related health issues, it's crucial to explore all available options. Don't let misconceptions about bariatric surgery prevent you from seeking a healthier future. Fewer Australians are having bariatric surgery. But for those who do - especially people living with diabetes - most experience significant weight loss and other benefits. The 2023 annual report of the Australia and New Zealand Bariatric Surgery Registry - led by Monash with partner organisations - is out today. Our Head of Surgery Professor Wendy Brown says the drop in procedures might be because of cost of living pressures and more people are turning to pharmaceutical alternatives to avoid surgery. Check out the At a Glance below for a handy #DataViz of trends and demographics. Wendy is also a guest on the latest episode - dropping later this week on your favourite podcasting platform - of the bariatric support australia podcast, the Bari Chronicles, hosted by Damien Verner and Tash Jarrett. https://lnkd.in/gQEy9-Z3 Read the news story: https://lnkd.in/gGpEutdk Download the report: https://lnkd.in/gt8EJPBG With the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care | Australian & New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) | Royal Australasian College of Surgeons | AANZGOSA | National Institute for Health Innovation | Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) #Monash #TranslationalMedicine #BariatricSurgery #Diabetes #RegistryResearch #HealthData #AusHealth

At the 2024 annual ASMBS conference in San Diego, we learned that there is an overwhelming need for post operative nutrition and mental health counseling 1-2 years after bariatric surgery and complications associated with lack of care. Surgeons and bariatric coordinators expressed frustration of not knowing where to send their patients for the help they need. In response to this need, PsyMed Health has started a new program called POWER to give the patients back their POWER after surgery. #bariatricsurgery #obesity #metabolicsurgery #obesitytreatment
During the most recent American Society For Metabolic And Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in San Diego, we learned that recurring issues reported in surgical practices were diet and vitamin nonadherence, increased depression and suicidality, increased alcohol use, return of old eating behaviors and lack of support. This symptomatology is particularly prevalent in patients more than 1 year postop and closer to 2 years. The consistent message from surgeons and bariatric coordinators was frustration and lack of resources to refer patients to "get back on track" and maintain motivation to sustain a healthier lifestyle required for long-term success with metabolic & bariatric surgery. In response to this need, PsyMed Health is offering POWER, a Post-Operative Wellness Evaluation & Resources. This post-op assessment evaluates each patient's behavioral and nutritional habits, coping styles and maladaptive behaviors contributing to weight regain and plateaus (emotionally and weight/ food related). Additionally, we will assess each patient's communication style and self-image to better equip them with appropriate tools and understanding their approach to behavior change. Once assessed, patients are presented with comprehensive supportive and corrective options. We look forward to giving the patients their POWER back to living a long, healthy life after bariatric surgery. 💪 #bariatricsurgery #obesity #medicalweightloss #metabolicsurgery

Thyroid health is crucial for our overall well-being. Nearly 42 million Indians suffer from thyroid-related disorders, and 8.5%-10% of them have visible thyroid nodules. These often present with symptoms such as visible neck swelling, cough, difficulty in speaking, breathing, or swallowing, and pain in the affected area. Muskaan, a 22-year-old, and a passionate singer, came to Zydus with visible neck swelling to undergo surgery for her thyroid swelling. However, surgery carried a significant minor injury to her recurrent laryngeal nerve (which supplies the voice box), which was unacceptable to her. Dr. Saketh Rao and Dr. Divyesh Dhadhania, Interventional Radiologists, suggested thyroid ablation as it would not risk any damage to her voice box. Similarly, Jhanvi, a 43-year-old, had significant swelling due to thyroid nodules. As a daycare procedure, both patients could be discharged on the same day of the procedure. While surgery is the common perception for treating thyroid nodules, modern techniques like ablation or embolization are gaining ground. These methods are scarless, and cosmetic while preserving thyroid function, and allowing hospital discharge within 24 hours of the procedure. Kudos to Dr. Rao, Dr. Dhadhania and Dr. Om Lakhani (Sr. Endocrinologist) and entire medical team for keeping up such excellent work. #ThyroidHealth #InnovativeTreatment #ThyroidAblation #ScarlessSurgery #ZydusHospitals #InterventionalRadiology #PatientCare #VoicePreservation #MedicalAdvancements #ThyroidNodules #HealthcareInnovation #DaycareProcedure #DrSakethRao #DrDivyeshDhadhania #MedicalExcellence

💫Arrhythmia refers to the rapid pulse exhibited by atrial tachycardia. Such is the nature of supraventricular tachycardia. 💫An episode of atrial tachycardia is characterised by a heart rate exceeding 100 pulses per minute. It then decreases to between sixty and eighty pulses per minute. An episode may begin gradually, abruptly, or suddenly and abruptly. It may induce symptoms including vertigo, lightheadedness, fainting, and a rapid or pounding heartbeat. 💫Atrioventricular tachycardia is prevalent. It may develop in expectant women or those who have recently undergone cardiac surgery. Alcohol consumption, infections, or stimulant medications may induce it.
