Public Art is most successful when you connect values to the space and create a dialogue between the material object of the #art and the functionality and #community of the space. Conrad Shawcross’s exhibition ‘Cascading Principles: Expansions within Geometry, Philosophy, and Interference’ does just that. I was extremely privileged to have a personal tour with the artist recently who explained the thinking behind his work and how it is deeply connected to #mathematical principles and practice. One of the wonderful things about working as an #artadvisor and a gallerist is getting to see #art that is unseen in #public. It’s a #privilege that I never take for granted. And from time to time as advisors we oversee the transition of treasured works from one collection to another which has to be a truly satisfying part of our work - finding good homes for work to be cared for and handing the baton of custodianship to another. In recent years I have been working closely for the estate of private collector who I personally knew for 15 years. It is a privilege to be handing the sale of these works, as it is as much about honouring the #legacy of the collector I knew as well as handling the safe transition of much loved pieces to the next generation. One such treasure is this oil painting by John Nash (1893-1977), younger brother of the more famous war artist Paul Nash. Like his brother Nash adored nature, botanicals and expressed through his work the power of the natural world. John became a war artist in 1918 and then again with the Royal Marines in 1940. Unlike his brother, he was self taught. John Nash and his work is now rightly getting the recognition he deserves. John was elected to the Royal Academy in 1951 and his work is now in collections of the Tate and The Courtauld Institute of Art ‘Coastal Landscape’ was acquired in 1986 and has now come to the market again 38 years later.
