Hiring is hard. I asked several founders of insights / res-tech start-ups who are crushing it at hiring what they believe contributes most to their *HIRING SUCCESS*. Five consistent themes emerged: 1. Strong vision 2. A++ early team (!!!) 3. Putting in the hard work 4. Founder’s network 5. Pitching prowess *Read on* But what if I told you there's a sixth, an equally significant but less celebrated aspect? 6. Emotional Intelligence The ability to perceive, reason, understand, and manage both one's own emotions and those of others. This falls under the "soft skills" category but is essential in building empathy, teamwork, and fostering a conducive work environment. A crucial, yet underrated element in the hiring process. What exactly is a data engineer? There are numerous common misconceptions surrounding the role, and firsthand, I've encountered many applications that don't quite align with its true nature. To me, a data engineer is someone who navigates data pipelines and patterns to construct products that cater to clients' needs. Now, one might wonder, do our platform engineers not deal with data? They certainly do. Any interaction with a database qualifies as data engineering; the distinction lies in the scale and complexity of the data involved. My own journey in data engineering commenced in a rather traditional manner, as I began developing mainframe applications for Syntel. That experience delved into the essence of old-school databases. Following my master's degree, I discovered more efficient approaches beyond mainframes. I pioneered robust pipelines for Trendrr and Twitter, tackling massive real-time data processing challenges in a time when suitable tools were scarce. Transitioning to building the data stack for Deepintent, initially within the realm of platform engineering, we eventually formed a dedicated team to oversee comprehensive pipelining and tool development. The evolution of our data engineering team has been remarkable. We progressed from a modest data stack featuring Kafka and MongoDB to a sophisticated infrastructure incorporating ClickHouse, Druid, and even Snowflake. As we introduce new products, our stack continues to evolve. Concurrently, our team has grown substantially; what began as a modest duo has flourished into a formidable force of 22 individuals, each contributing expertise ranging from data quality assurance to governance. So, what does it entail to be part of the DeepIntent Data team? It involves crafting pipelines from scratch without heavy reliance on preexisting tools. A willingness to learn, coupled with a strong foundation in Java or Python and a knack for database manipulation, forms the ideal profile. Do you believe you fit this description? The biggest problem with hiring today is that companies are trying to automate processes that cannot be automated. You cannot replace HUMAN instinct, experience, insight and wisdom with skills finders tests or keyword searches to pick candidates. While technology is great, it will never be greater than a human.... A person who has the wisdom, compassion, empathy, sense of humor, or gut instinct to make smart hiring decisions should be celebrated....not automated. No amount of pre-employment tests will build loyalty, uncover hidden talents, or give a worthy candidate an opportunity even if they don't check all the boxes.
