"How, when, and why did women in the US obtain legal rights equal to men’s regarding the workplace, marriage, family, Social Security, criminal justice, credit markets, and other parts of the economy and society, decades after they gained the right to vote? The story begins with the civil rights movement and the somewhat fortuitous nature of the early and key women’s rights legislation. The women’s movement formed and pressed for further rights. Of the 155 critical moments in women’s rights history I’ve compiled from 1905 to 2023, 45% occurred between 1963 and 1973. The greatly increased employment of women, the formation of women’s rights associations, the belief that women’s votes mattered, and the unstinting efforts of various members of Congress were behind the advances. But women soon became splintered by marital status, employment, region, and religion far more than men. A substantial group of women emerged in the 1970s to oppose various rights for women, just as they did during the suffrage movement. They remain a potent force today." These photos from House of Commons, show the diversity within our Cabinet ministers and Caucus compared to the conservatives. Take a look at the representation in each frame— it’s hard not to see how our Liberal government ensures women are not just present but pivotal in our decision-making. Meanwhile, you only see women in photos of the conservative caucus when you see the leader - the limited number of conservative women MPs strategically arranged around him giving the impression of a higher proportion of women than is actually the fact. Our dedication to women’s rights, including access to free contraceptives, is not just a policy but a promise. We will continue to protect the rights guaranteed in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms and of course women’s right to choose. Women’s rights are human rights. #GenderEquality #womensrightsarehumanrights

📢 Introducing the new ERA Pledge Female Arbitrator Resources Tool! 📢 Are you struggling to find information on qualified women arbitrators and other diverse candidates? The ERA Pledge has compiled a toolkit of resources to help you! Party appointments of women arbitrators have stalled at around 17-19% over the past few years, which is a long way behind the 37% average female appointments by the arbitral institutions. A lack of knowledge, by both by external and in-house counsel, of suitable candidates is often cited as a reason why. Please share this with your colleagues involved in appointing arbitrators and use these resources to ensure that arbitrator shortlists are sufficiently diverse with a fair representation of women. To access the links, please download the word document or view it on the Pledge website here: https://lnkd.in/d9bJBkm Any feedback, please let Ashley Jones know! We hope you find it useful! #diversityinarbitration #diversityandinclusion #erapledge

New #research out from me today: "Beyond Participation, Toward Disparticipation" in the Quarterly Journal of Speech. #TeamRhetoric Remember this iconic image of Angela Peoples's "Remember: White Women Voted for Trump" sign at the 2017 Women's March? I theorize her #intersectional #feminist engagement as "disparticipation." Disparticipation is participatory, disidentifying dissent. Peoples, along with two other examples from the Women's March, show how disparticipants dissent from binary oppositions of popular/pure and reformist/radical and disidentify to promote coalition-building. In turn, I argue that disparticipation can help inspire #SocialMovement participation that takes advantage of popular interest and mass assembly without settling for lackluster politics. You can access a free copy here, or if they've run out--shoot me a message, I'll get you a PDF! https://lnkd.in/e3yHrj62

On this International Women’s Day, we want to highlight the importance of equal representation in politics, which was one of the reasons why Jo Cox entered politics. At The Jo Cox Foundation, we seek to end the abuse and intimation that discourages so many from entering political life and particularly impacts women. With the Jo Cox Civility Commission recommendations, we are campaigning for action to be taken so that abuse has no place in politics. We must create a more equal and respectful society where women can thrive and participate in politics without fear. Read the report ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e6xr4drX

Today, we celebrate the leaders who have shaped our nation and our democracy. We know not all of the past actions of our leaders have upheld our nation’s professed values of liberty and justice for all. And we believe in the importance of standing up for the marginalized and underrepresented, and fighting for everyone’s rights. But we reject the idea that our society is irreversibly divided, or must become even more divided. We must come together as a country to build a more just and equitable future for all. We believe in a vision of America where everyone is respected, protected, and represented; regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, or socioeconomic status. We might have different ideas of how to fight for justice. We might come from or live in different places or situations. But the determination that justice and equality are worth fighting for and must be our guiding principles should always unite us: as women, as citizens, as a country, as a society. As we celebrate, it’s crucial to also note the continued absence of women in the highest office. In over 230 years, the United States has yet to have a female president. Women’s representation in government is a vital issue, with the U.S. lagging behind many other nations in women’s representation in national legislatures, even after recent progress. Having women in leadership positions brings diverse perspectives and priorities that benefit everyone. It’s time to break down the barriers preventing women from running and winning elections, ensuring our government reflects the diversity of our nation. Let’s honor our history today, and look forward to the day when we can proudly say, “Madam President.” #PresidentsDay

✅ “Every little helps” - this short sentence stays with me after reading an article about the importance of women supporting women in the workplace. My key takeaways: 👉 By providing support to one another, women can create a more inclusive and empowering work environment that benefits everyone! 👉 As women, we can encourage and mentor each other to break barriers and succeed in our careers. It's vital to listen, understand, and offer guidance to fellow female colleagues. Let's uplift and empower each other! What are your thoughts on this? Have you experienced this kind of support at your workplace? Want to know more? Read the article ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dpASjmSs #makehistory #women #support #workplace
