It’s Monday. And I’m not working. I’m enjoying my kids’ Winter Break in Costa Rica. The first several years I had my firm, I couldn’t take a vacation without being stressed. I was worried I would miss something. I’d lose out on a new client. Work that needed to be done wouldn’t get done. There’s a limiting belief many law firm owners have that growing their firm means they’ll have to work more, they’ll have even less freedom, and they’ll be more stressed out. I think this stems from a belief that as the owner they have to produce all the revenue that will pay for this additional overhead. More people and more overhead will equal more stress. This is completely false. When you hire the right people and structure your business the right way, things actually become easier for you. You can focus on the things you enjoy doing in the business. And you can take vacations without worrying that your law firm will stop running.

Fee Targets: The Bane of Senior Lawyers' Existence? 🤔 Most senior lawyers find themselves putting in some serious hours to try and manage a huge volume of cases just to try and meet those fee targets. To escape this continuing slog, senior lawyers may ask themselves: · Does the fight to hit those billable hours mess with the quality of my work and wellbeing? · Why do our salaries not keep up with rising fee targets? · Are we sacrificing our sanity for the job? One thing is certain, we don’t get that time back again. What else would you do with your time if you had some?! Likely, walk the dog, drop the kids off at school and put a wash on! or something more adventurous?!! but at least it would be your time, your say! 😊

𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 One of the best times to consider the different components of shifting your legal practice is November - this allows you to take full advantage of the reduced workflow from clients over the summer run through to February in a notice period. Firm Leaders are beginning to consider strategic needs and/or changes in direction to meet client demands for next year so options emerge. It is a good time to think about what you most need for your team, your clients and yourself for next year. Try asking yourself: 🔹Is your leverage correct for you to be able to win the work you want to have time to pursue? 🔹Are your rates correctly aligned with the value you provide to clients? 🔹Is the firm pulling in the same direction as you, can they see what you can see? 🔹Do you enjoy the right design between balance and remuneration that suits your life? 🔹Does the idea of the Work Christmas Party lift my spirits or fill you with dread? Great cultural barometer this one! #lawyers #careercoaching #careerdevelopment #growthmindset

May 2016 was an important milestone in my career. I decided to start my own practice. That was also the time I cleared CS. When I made this decision I wanted to hire a small place for my office at a prime location which is far from my residence. I was going through tough time personally and exhausted all my savings in repaying my loan and other commitments. I was really doubtful about starting practice at that point of time. After giving it a second thought finally I made a decision. Once decision was made, I never looked back. I hired this shared desk at nungambakkam during May 2016. This desk was my first private office. Due to my personal situations, I could only go thrice a week to office for few months. Initially I could not even achieve breakeven. I hardly had 3 to 4 clients at that time. Never had an office board. Many people told me to have my office my home till that point where I get some income. I still believed what my mind said and proceeded for this. Few things I followed to ensure discipline during my initial days of practice. 1. Reporting to office whether I had work or not. I used the free time to update myself, learn Few provisions of law, create checklists for future work, write blogs etc. 2. Even though I earned less, I tried to save some money to buy books, bare acts, etc whenever possible. 3. Spent decent portion of my working hours networking with people for work. 4. Regularly wrote a performance journal. 5. Properly maintained accounts even if it is a small sum. 6. Promptly paid office rent, bills and referral commissions irrespective of my speculating financial position. 7. Did pro Bono work as a matter of policy to my possible extent. 8. Strengthened my social media profile. 9. Never met any clients at home and always planned meetings at office. 10.Always kept work life balance to the maximum possible extent. Back to present, my business is now 8 years old. After going through lot of ups and downs I am slowly growing and more precisely sustaining in practice. Now I feel that listening to what my inner self said ignoring outsider comments was the best thing happened to me in my profession. #lawyer #myoffice
