The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law 34 years ago today, July 26. This historic civil rights law protects the rights of people with disabilities. The Center for Disability Inclusion (CDI), a CMF partner organization, shares several resources to help advance disability inclusion in the workplace, mental health and support business strategies. Explore the Resources: https://lnkd.in/gWbktr_2 Several CMF members and CMF have signed the Disability Inclusion Pledge, which was developed by the Presidents’ Council of the Disability & Philanthropy Forum to advance disability inclusion across the philanthropic sector. The Disability Inclusion Pledge recognizes that ableism is a barrier to equity and inclusion. Foundations and philanthropy-serving organizations that have signed the pledge will commit to advancing systemic change within their organizations regarding disability inclusion. Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act #ADA. This historic civil rights legislation prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The ADA ensures that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. As we celebrate how far we've come, I'm proud to share the launch of NJ's Disability Information Hub. The hub is a website organizing information about services NJ offers to support people with disabilities throughout their lifespan. This work is the result of 12 years by a remarkable team at the state led by Diana Maurone. The hub takes that information and presents it to you in an accessible format that is easy to understand and navigate. It also connects you to live Community Resource Specialists who can help answer questions and guide you to the services you need based on your individual circumstances. Please take a minute to watch the official launch below and be sure to visit the hub anytime at:nj.gov/disabilities #ADA35 #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #DisabilityRights #Inclusion #Accessibility #DisabilityAwareness #NJDisabilityHub #CivilRights #EqualOpportunities #CommunitySupport #DisabilityServices #AccessForAll #CelebrateDiversity #Empowerment #AccessibilityMatters #SupportForAll

It's Disability Pride Month! Join us in celebrating diversity through disability. Learn from people with disabilities whose voices are loud and proud. You don't know what you don't know. One such person is Theo W. Braddy from the National Council on Independent Living. In the image below, he states: "Ableist ideas and beliefs affect people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including employment, healthcare, education, housing, transportation, etc. These ideas and beliefs create systems that discriminate and oppress people with disabilities." This quote originally appeared in Good Housekeeping in April 2024. How can YOU make a difference for people with disabilities today? #EastersealsWV #DisabilityPrideMonth #LearnSomethingNew

Meet Angel Ponce, Director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities! Today, we sat down with Angel to learn more about his mission to advocate for Houstonians with disabilities. Angel has dedicated years to ensuring that people with disabilities have the same rights and access to services as everyone else in Houston. Angel emphasizes the importance of inclusion in the workplace, reminding us that it starts with leadership. From adding alt text to social media posts to providing ASL interpreters at events, there are countless ways to make workplaces more accessible and inclusive. One common misconception he addresses is the belief that people with disabilities are incapable. But as Angel highlights, there are so many talented individuals with the skills and experience to succeed. It’s all about communication and seeing the person, not the disability. Let’s work together to break down barriers and create inclusive environments for everyone! Tip 1: Know how to identify people with disabilities in your community. Many population health surveys use the six standard disability questions to identify disabled people.https://ow.ly/NVk050SsSeN These questions can also be used to help you identify people who need accommodations. For example, these questions can be incorporated into your State’s National Quitline to identify people with disabilities and any accommodations needed for tobacco cessation.
