Yesterday we talked about the fastest growing and fastest declining industries in Oregon. If your industry was in the declining category, you probably got a little worried. So today we offer how to identify your #TransferrableSkills to a new industry and occupation. 1. Identify the industry and occupation that you are interested in. Learn what you can about that industry through online research. Identify a few of the top companies in that industry and visit their #LinkedIn company page to learn more. 2. Once you've identified the industry you are interested in, research the occupations available within that industry. Look up individual occupations on onetonline.org where you can explore the tasks, technology and skills needed for that type of work. 3. After honing in on your targeted occupation, go through the skills and work activities lists and highlight the hard and soft skills you already possess. 4. Research opportunities to gain the skills you will also need for the occupation you are interested in. 5. Talk with #WorkSourceOregon to see if there are resources that can assist you with obtaining the necessary skills, certifications and/or trainings needed in your pursuit of the new occupation. You may find that you already have many of the skills needed to transition into a new occupation. This information can help to build your targeted resume for the new industry and occupation that you choose to pursue. BONUS TIP: Further customize and target your resume using the same method above with each individual job description you apply to. Take the job description information instead of the O'NET Online list and highlight the skills and attributes you possess that match then write your cover letter and resume accordingly to highlight the fit. #JobSeeker #JobSearch #WorkforceDevelopment

90% OF JOBS CAN BE THOUGHT. GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE! Dear employers, the idea of having 25, 30, 10, 5 years of experience is really unnecessary. Most of these jobs can be thought and the employee will pick up. You as the employer, you once had Zero experience but you where thought till you pick up. Give the young once the opportunity to learn and grow. If everyone keep asking for years of experiences without being employed, where will they get the experience from? There are so many people that if trained will work better and smarter so why deny them the job opportunities? So many people do not have jobs because they lack experience and yet no one wants to give them the experience they need. It can be frustrating when employers only focus on years of experience. Giving people a chance to learn and grow is so important. It's true that everyone starts with zero experience, and with the right training, they can excel in their roles.
